Why do people talk non-stop and so loudly in a roots dance?

Post by stepping razor »

You know when you got a roots crowd their there for the music and not a gossip social network place to catch up on what colour shirt one of the big brother nobodies is wearing today, right across the dance floor like their talking to JAH or something. Its how you use your voice, some voices realy carry where as some you wont even notice.
As a tape man in the dance weather shaka or my crews sound they want me to tape it cos i get the best sound on the tape.I have been ambushed at a few dances jah shaka with johnny clarke with the ruff cut band down the holloway rocket some 10 odd years ago and cos the man at the mixing desk (hired hand) kept fiddling about with the knobs the sound wasnt happening, so i thought oh no im here for spare time not to do work, so i went near the back where the mixing desk was and just gave the man a look every time he wanted to twiddle the mixing desk, but he could not help himself, so i said "you touch the board again i am going to slam my tape machine on your fingers on the mixing desk" and he was thinking im some big super.
He could see and hear that after a few minutes johnny clarke was happy with the sound "set it set it" and the show went well.
Near the end when shaka was playing out the dance the promoters wanted my recording of the dance cos their mixing man had done a whoopsee on his recording right hear we have an ambush its all on the tape cos they nah get it.
.
There is a couple of things that have changed dances the smoking ban so they have to talk more were as before they would stick a ciggy or a spliff in their mouths and would not talk so loudly and so much. the other is having video in moblie phones its like when the dance is being filmed and how its being film so not as to impose on peoples space.
I dont think a roots sound wants drunks who cant handle their drink and popping pills it only leads to trouble, which is bad anuff with roots music`s rep anyway without people at the dance spoiling it for the others who want a break from babylons works and non stop media chat, let the mike man chat thats what hes there for.
Peace

totally stepping razor. it really gets annoying sometimes. especially in san diego with all the trust fund babies and
beach trendys getting waisted at roots shows. it seems as though they arnt aware that its a roots reggae show. i see the same amount of violence and illicit drug use (other than herb)at reggae shows that i see at rock and hip hop shows.

that is truley sad news greg...a damn shame, i would think in san diego (where there seems to be a bigger reggae scene) you wouldnt find that as much, but i guess its all over... i like to go to roots shows to get away from all that crap! i would presume that people are there for the music, but unfortunatly that is not always the case (td)

At the Highness Sound System at the Bodega Social Club in Nottingham, UK the music is so loud there's no chat! All the chat go on in the smoking garden out the back.

I have been a few times now and never even seen a hint of violence despite Nottingham's reputation as a tuff city.

you would think that easy but reggae music is taken for granted here it seems. you can thank bands like sublime for bringin those kinda of crowds into roots shows.
here in san diego we suffer from a bad case of dude bro reggae. its the worst sounding noise i have ever heard!
unfortunatley the line that use to be drawn clearly has now been faded so you get alot of crossbreeding reggae music with surf/gutterpunk and hip hop :X

A lot of venues have noise limits, and theres a law saying the venue under their lagal terms can only have music at a certain db level and if you go over it they want you to turn it down. Also there are hardly any venues that go on to 6 or 7am in the morning. If the music is too loud it can hurt your ears over years.
The very good dances which a crowd makes as well, is very rare these days and as a tape man you want it not too loud to make the recording so loud it bleed over the tape like people ears, and not too low so as you get the chatter. Also not many people praise JAH inna dance.
JAH RASTAFARI SELASSIE I

Not many people praise Jah at all nowadays.

Instead they praise themselves and Gucci, Prada, Nike etc etc.

But that's another matter!

You seem to complaint about people not praising Jah or Rastafari... I personnally dont find really roots or conscious when people repeat "Rastafari" after the MC shout "Jah"... I dont think there are as many rastas as people shouting "rastafari"... even if Im not here to judge who are the true *rastas*, Ive never understood why so many Jamaican artist enjoy that a wide crowd, away from their beliefs, scand "Rastafari"... I understand, feel and share their message, but dont call Rastafari, as Im no rasta.

yes indeed leggo, either all those brands, or celebrities in the movies or on TV that have really done nothing for you, but people hold them on this pedistal like they are some how better than us regular folk...

Greg:

haha dude/bro reggae huh? is that like people who try and imitate sublime, and think they are heavy roots? i mean dont get me wrong, i used to really enjoy sublime, but i find a lot of people out here way over play them and think that they are the best thng since sliced bread, unfortunatly i have been throughly burned out on them, but people still play their music like they are playing it for the first time, like i went to a friends party and the friend that was spinning started in with a few sublime records and i thought everyone was going mess themselfs over it and i was almost annoyed and wanted to drive home and get MY records and show these people a thing or two...but i digress.

i can dig on what your saying though...becuase i think a lot of people at this party would be the kinda people to go to a roots show to get trashed and not to see the band...
