Nice too hear some dances still going on old style.with the good vibes we all love.I have found lately the better dances are out in the country side in the middle of nowhere at a church hall or comminity centre, pubs in the middle of nowhere and cos their staved of music in the sticks they really appreciate the event and the music, and people have smiles on their faces, the dances are always rammed and always peaceful.

So when Jah Shaka played at Dingwalls Camden Lock (if it aint burnt down after last weeks fire) played a few dances there last year, i was told everyone just talked right through the dance, so your saying shakas to blame and his mic chat aint right...no its the camden town trendies and their being camden town trendies.

I agree with Steppah here. It's NOTHING to do with the crew, it's the crowd.

Some peoples voices dont carry at all and i dont mind them talking what so ever cos you dont hear or notice it,Also they dont need to talk every second. But the voices that realy carry have to shout the music down just to get heard, like on speakers corner.Taping a dance i get people come up to me and say "Is that a tape recorder?" and i would say if i can be boovered "No its a sound boy lick down" that seems to end the conversation.

wot annoys me more is when i'm really enjoying the sound and the vision and some idiot keeps trying to start a conversation with me. now i'm not an ignorant guy, i will talk to anyone and i like to chat to new people at a dance, but when i start rocking i like to keep rocking. i was at a session last year, went most of the day and right through till 6 am. shaka was on last. he started around 11 pm. i was geared up for this. and as soon as shaka started to play this guy near me starts pulling at my jacket trying to start a conversation. i'm trying to be polite and speak with him for a minute or two, but he's not happy with that, he wants a full scale conversation. so i had to pick up my stuff and move to a 'quieter' area. damn. why do they even bother goin to a dance. needless to say, liqor mouth didnt last too long in the place, shakas bass took care of that for me.

The thing with me at a shaka dance is i pitch my spot for the best place to record it and thats it im not moving for no one im deaf & dub and cant understand nothing so they go off and bug someone else.
When i see someone i know we just have a quick hello cos i may know 50 people in the dance and have to say hello to all of them so i dont have much time to chat and we can do that at the end of the dance.
They know im there for the dancing and once im dancing people i know know im dancing.
Whats funny is that some people think i dont know no one and think i need some one to talk to cos im lonley, no im dancing and its not the tango. That happens rarely and most of the dances are boom.

I should have called it Why do people talk non-stop and so loudly in life.
Its like when people use their mobile phones and their voice gets loud, like i want to know what going down to be a witness or something.
Most of the chat has no substance and is just the gabel gossip world, the world lives in.Its the new found culture of non stop blabal and they talk so fast like the world is going to end in 5 minutes or is that my batteries.
Like the James Brown song Talking loud and Saying Nothing.
Dancehalls are for the music, not a social networking club to talk about tv adverts so lougly at a roots dance.
I dont mind the general hub bub and comments (make a joyful noise unto Jah) about the dance as it happens.Thats what a reggae dance is all about.
Now if the selector handed you the mic, would then be able to chat and not drunk blabber. So why would we want to listern to your drunken blabber in the dance what so ever.
People who cant hold their drink and reggae dont mix.
Peace

Re: Why do people talk non-stop and so loudly in a roots dance?
In San Francisco we have a no smoking law enforced in most of the clubs. One time a dread got in a fight with a young "trust fund" type for lighting a cigarette amongst a ton of herb smokers. It was really shocking to see a fight just over a ciggy. Yet, at the same time I see a bunch of dreads drinking red wine and beer. I have no clue as to their religious views (don't know until you ask) and this is even further complicated by having roots music mixed with a lot of slack. As for slack, it's always been there anyway. It's a matter of "culture's clashing" and your perceptions of the scene being challenged the whole time. Just wish the systems in the Bay Area were amped up!

Ites deh
beeing Portugal a smal and quiet place few little partys go around and almost are new dancehall....
Still i play with some friend and its strictly Roots so we do a kind of difference cause ther's about 2 or 3 sounds here dat plays strictly roots the rest go for the demanded dancehall and a guy screaming and a few hits from roots era.
So me and my friends we are lucky cause when we play few are dancing and feeling the vibes so i have space to jump and prance and do some toastings in the old fashioned way cause when i play i just love to feel the music and have the oportunity to listen loud a ting dat i can´t do at home then some come closer but the rest just stand there looking and moving heads..
but when the dancehal sound come around they just love it and i don't blame them cause its the demand and the reggae boom here was around 5 years back so roots din't have the force dat was needed...
Still beside people like more dancehall i'm happy cause we have no kind of problems everyone is united...
