Hi --
I'm looking for a good set of cheap car speakers because I want to play dub without fearing that I'll blow the stock speakers out of my car (amongst other music).
I'm not looking to get all into sub-woofers or anything like that, I just am thinking about replacing the four speakers that came with the car (although two I switched out already). There are two in the front, one in each panel of the door, and two in the back, by the back windshield (car is a sedan).
I know absolutely nothing about cars or stereo systems -- I live in the U.S. and I'm basically just looking for something cheap I can go get at a major store or something and have someone at the store install it for me.
Any recommendations? / Idea of a price for set-up and all that?
Much thanks

Any three way speakers under $ 80.00 are ok.

i know you said you dont want to get into subs and such, but i mean i think you should at least think about it.
you know, ask around, maybe someone is selling their box with subs, and all you would need is a simple mono channel amp (can be bought for cheap)
the installation is not hard at all, i installed my first setup without knowing anything (it helps to have a friend with you)
you could get 1 or 2 10s for a nice punchy bass, or 1 12" for a real deep sound...it also depends on the amp too, for the kind of sound you get.
Once you hear/feel that bass in your ride, youll wonder how you listened to any other way
also having a sub takes some of the bass away from the speakers so you are less likely to blow them out.

I once rigged up some hi-fi speakers to my old car stereo. It worked a treat! But then it was a big old car with room in the back for a pair of two foot high speakers!

I've already got a pair of monsters those on my shopping list Easy! Pure fantasy maybe but we must all have dreams I guess!
But if I had spent so much on the hi-fi I would also want a special room for it all. Otherwise all the windows are gonna be buzzing and the floorboards rumbling and other sonic interference will be going on.
I've heard that real hard-line audiophiles actually have the record deck in a separate room from the amps and speakers to avoid any possibility of the deck picking up feedback from the speakers (via the tone arm or cartridge). Now that's dedication! Getting up to change the record is bad enough without having to change rooms to change a record.

Carthief.. Interesting name. Anyway, i loaded up my car with subs many time, everytime i do i get broken into so i have given up now.
I tried mounting two 18 pioneer 3k speakers and *i forget* an amp underside, that sounded decent for a few days...
the next lot i put in were FLI active 12" 1000w active speakers, these got stolen too.. but they sounded pretty good before they did..
how much money you looking to spend?
btw: get decent speakers in your door and tops, their more difficult to steal and *always* remove the faceplate of your cd/tape player.

Re: Good Car Speakers for Dub
Without getting into subwoofers Nefta has the right idea.
3 ways speakers are the route.
Pick up some nice 2 or 3 way speakers for your doors, maybe combined with a 1" to 1 1/2" dome tweeter you can mount on the door pillar or on the head liner.
You can probably run these off the head unit (cd player)
Back dash wise you'll definitely want a 3 way speaker.
I would look into having the factory speaker holes enlarged and mounting 6"x9"s.
These will give you a lot more bass and highs.
Downside is you'll need a amp to run them.
