and i forgot to mention but who is it paying hundreds of dollars for 7''s and LPs...
im sure some of you out there...what is your reasoning? just curious.

I'm guilty of paying as much as 400 USD for an LP. I don't buy 7".

However, unlike many of my peers, I drive an old Toyota worth maybe 600 bucks. They all drive cars that cost them that in payments EACH MONTH.

Yes, some of us are disgustingly rich by third world standards. And it would be more pious of me to send all this money to aid the poor. But no, I don't think I'm going to stop buying reggae music because of that.

Some people I know are even spending amounts of money just on cigarettes that could support entire third world villages!

However, I did stop buying meat a long time ago when I realised it was the principle cause of world starvation and poverty and environmental destruction. The role of meat eating in all this is at least up there with war, if not far more so.

The world seems unfair but maybe we are all getting just exactly what we deserve?

I came here by occasion on this forum.I'm buying reggae records for about 3O years.Mys passion was and is still
Studio One.I can say I have about 80/90 pct of the singles
10 and 12 inches and also the albums even with their different sleeves but I never gave a fortune for one record because for me it was the music that counts not the labels on a record.I still searchin for studio ones in second hand shops and sometimes i found something good but most of the reggae records are becoming too much expensive because it's created by the collectors themselves.For example the english labels like Ska beat, Blue Beat, R&B records, Rio, doctor bird etc they are their price not worth because you will founding the same tunes on another label for sometimes about 3/4 dollars
E-bay is a good site but not good for poor reggae lovers
because they will giving most of the time too much for a record.That's that magic of auctions.Is it the music that counts of that magic "I must have that record"

I shelled out pretty hard on some of the rare stuff out of the late Robert Shoenfeld's collection last summer.

Recently I paid way too much for Musical Intimidators in Dub (Tappa Zukie). About 400 usd for a VG+ to EX- copy only to see a minter go for just 200 the very next week!

That hurt and actually sort of brought me to my senses a bit and I've backed RIGHT off since then.

Also, my focus has changed. I'm tending to look for killer 12s to take to my gigs to play, rather than LPs for home as I really have enough already!

I don't have any second hand record shops worth visiting within easy reach. Travel is so expensive in the UK that taking a ride to somewhere with record shops would cost me loads and mean time out when I should be working. So I'm a bit stuck with eBay.

I think the most i spent was £100 (200 us?) on a 12" but i cant remember which.. and i have spent about £80 a few times, once on ghetto children - ghetto tears; i think selah collins - pick a sound and jack wilson - chuck it cost me a bit too.
I should really note down their prices for future reference but i think it'd be a bit materialistic

with the extremely weak dollar now its for Europeans much more interesting to buy records from US then buy them here.
I was looking yesterday and for example:
Abyssinians: Satta (Azul) 13 EUR (hard wax Germany) - 13,50 EUR (giraffe records Belgium) and in US 10,99 $ (7,1 EUR)!!

even with shipping costs (+/- 2 EUR each LP) its still cheaper!!

next time i order from USA, although waiting for records to arrive is less fun then buying them in a store...

Totally agree with buying from the U.S at the moment.I also agree that it is the waiting that`s the pain !

I know i have paid too much for some tunes in the past and i wouldnt like to say that i wont in the future.However reggae is my absolute passion and as such i spend what i want to on it.I dont drink gamble or smoke at all and i try not to take too much more from this world than i put back but in the society we live in its not possible for there to be an equilibrium.

About reggae music.There is a site that has the history of bids from ebay and has a search engine to find the artist or label.They list all types of music as well as roots reggae.It is a site for the collector of all types of records.
