Roots Reggae from Canada

Post by collieman »

With the discovery of a band called "20th century rebels" i love more & more the roots reggae from Canada
Bands like Ishan People confirm that canadians bands have made great great albums.

So i'd like to discover more artists from this country released from 76 to 90 with great vibes & deeply voices & melody.

1-Anyone could suggest me some artists & albums?

2-Does someone knows bands called "Truths & Rights" & "O Ji Ji" ?

Thanks
Ites

I've heard about Truth & Rights being one of the early bands in Canada, their lead singer Mojah did a solo album in 1992 I think

You have the Half Moon label, check the compilation cd Majesty Glory Dominion on Honest Jon's

Ishan People was OK, Johnny Osbourne was a member of that band

You have Messenjah and another band with the legendary Jo Jo Bennett I can't remember their name

There is Willi Williams of course

Jackie Mittoo, who was involved with Willie Williams' "Messenger Man" album also recorded often in Canada. I remember once seeing a compilation on DustyGroove.com for a compilation of Reggae from a Canadian label but the title eludes me.

strugglah: was ibo and iwango on vocals(both from nevis) and released album "conciousness"(good songs; dem a lie, cost a living, keeper of my life, reggae music) in 1997, ibo went solo and iwango kept strugglah going like a solo project, then they make two albums, both 2004.

Ibo the Prayer: recorded in canada, jamaica, and nevis, jamaican sessions have dean fraser on them recorded in cocoa tea's studio, good songs; raise i conciousness, wicked a go run, what a pity, peace.

iwango mek, strugglah:people all over the world; good songs.

home in my head(& dub),music, sensimilla, people all over the world, maximum raspect.

from ottawa is garnet challnger, he was asked by ambassador from cameroon to make a song for african unity which turned out good and was popular in africa,he is from dominica.
good songs

whitehorse man
african unity
one race,many colors.

the drummer from messenjah's latter day line up, o del made and album called mind body and sold last year on universal, messenjah had a lot of albums but i haven't heard any, odel is in a crew called ultimate crew that backs artists at many festivals.

jason wilson and taburruk is a white group that mixes reggae rock and jazz and aren't bad, they tour as backing band for brinsley forde from aswad.

bedouin soundclash is pretty soft but aren't bad and have a hit single right now "when the night feels my song" the singer sounds like bob marley but they don't look alike at all.

a good lovers rock singer is Ryan.

for dancehall all i know is jahronimo and sampaloo, j. is ok,i haven't heard sampaloos album, but live he was terrible.

i've seen album from 1997 by band called selassie i power but haven't bought yet.

I have an LP by a Canadian reggae group name Soul Explosion. The LP is "Out Of Many One People" on their label and from late 70's or very early 80's. Despite the band's name it is a very good reggae act and there is only one (cheesy) soul tune on the LP.

Unfortunatly noone was able to provide infos every time I asked about.
