Post 1985 Reggae?

Post by Dubs_West »

Greetings

I love most roots and dub sounds and own loads of Pre 85` and post 1985 reggae and enjoy them all the same! but i must admit that the seventies was where most of the classics were recorded.I hear allot of bredrin on this forum speaking about not listening to post 85` reggae music due to digital sound being incorporated into the reggae sound at these periods. Please correct me if i`m wrong about that statement made:)

I`m new to reggae compared to allot of the old boyz here even though i am a rastaman and i own alot of riddims and have got to know allot about this genre since about the mid nineties when i first came to love and contract "Reggaemylitis":D I own albums stretching from the early seventies all the way up to late nineties with regards to this genre and find that as much as i love all roots and dub including some dancehall i do enjoy post 85` reggae too(tu)

What i am asking here is could somebody tell me what happened to the reggae sound after 1985 that makes alot of older dreads not interested in listening to it?I heard about digital being the reason but what disastrous affect did it have on reggae recordings to make people not enjoy it? because in my mind i enjoy post 85` reggae sounds allot but do realise that the golden age of reggae roots and dub was 1970-1985.

Grateful for any answers to this question that has had me guessing for some time now:)

Peace out!(tu)

It is not dreads or rastas who dislike post 85 reggae it is mainly just some people on this site and other close minded indivisuals. Reggae music live continually no matter what year it was made.

Now if you're speaking on the topic of slackness then there is your reason some religious people dont like it.

If you're talking about how some 90s and later reggae is just crap, well that comes with any music at any time.

If you're talking about digital sound vs. 70s roots sound, then thats just a matter of preference.

Hope this helped.

I think that the main point in relation to roots archives is that is is intended to be for pre 1985 reggae and that is how it advertises itself. That is why i personally use and enjoy it.I dont think it has got anything to do with being closed minded -you know what you like and thats the way it is!

I like reggae post 1985, there are many good tunes out there from 1985 to, now.
But I admit, that most 'killers' are from the golden years, 1970-85.

Well,

For me problem with post '85 reggae is about SOUND. Sometimes, the album is very good in musical aspect, but sounds terrible. Few days ago I played Big Youth's Luta Continua and thought: why they destroyed this good album with this awaful synth drum sound?

And in '90s music generally sounded too, let's say, sterile. For me, after '85 spirit of reggae was gone, the good sound was gone, old reggae masters lowered their level or stopped recording, new artists had different approach...

Of course, there were still good albums, but "the thing" was gone imo...

THE SOUND:)

Maybe I put it wrong: there is no problem with the music - if you like it, it makes you feel GOOD, then there is absolutely NOTHING wrong:)

But why they used those synt drums?;)
