I like macka b and respect what he does, but, just to play devil's advocate: In some ways he reminds me of BDP/KRS-One in that he has fantastic lyrics, but his style and the music sometimes just don't hit like the other djs and JA stuff that sean is maligning.
BDP always had great lyrics but a lot of people thought the beats were kind of lacking, or even his style and voice sometimes. That's kind of how I feel about Macka B. I always want to hear what he has to say and wonder why other djs don't put as much effort into crafting intelligent lyrics, but I don't find myself reaching for Macka B that often. When I really want some banging dancehall, it ain't gonna be Macka B I draw for. Maybe it just depends on the importance you place on lyrics vs. music/style. Plus, sometimes super instructive and moralizing lyrics can get tiresome, frankly. I don't look to djs or musicians in general for moral instruction and don't need to be preached at. Mostly, that isn't what Macka B does; mostly he just puts together clever, smart lyrics. I'm just saying I think sometimes didactic lyrics are overrated.
And this is all devil's advocate, too. I normally would never say anything against Macka B, 'cause he's a great artist, but sean seemed desperate for someone to say something.

Yes I was Flashman, and many thanks for the comments. I think you speak the truth here. As we say, you "hit the nail on the head".Yes.Old stuff by Macka B, eg Sign of the Times or Weve had Enough, are two great 1980s albums, reflecting tip top 80s roots. The Dub Asante band dont do a lot for me, and the feel right now is too modern and almost digital. Some preaching does go on, as it does with Luciano and a few others too. Thanks for a fine post .
