yeah, well, whatever as the man said.
What is all of the crap in the grooves and why? Doesn't anyone want to know that?
On of my favourite purchases and albums is Freddie McKay Picture on the Wall which I bought in Derrick Harriott's shop in Kingston.
I tried playing it on my turntable and it was impossible - it played but was bad - can't remember exactly how it sounded - but I could see that there was brown gunk coming up off the grooves.
When I got over the weird surprise of this anomalie I took a look at the record properly. It looked like brown vinyl. The whole thing was covered in brown silt of some sort.
What is this - and is it a common occurrence?
I've never come across it before.
I'm OK with clicks and pops that you can weed out with patience or if ripping minimize - not a big deal - but alluvial particulate brown mud on a record? How can that be?
One of the great mysteries of my life...
Great album of course after washing mildly with dish washing liquid and a hedge trimmer...nyah, nyah nyah. joking of course.

I use the Knosti machine. OK, it looks like a childs´ toy from the 70s, but works fine. The disco-antistat fluid costs about 15 Euros - which is overprized. So I mix my own fluid in my kitchen laboratory:-))
70% distilled water + 30% alcohol(=Ethanol 70%) + 10 drops glass cleaner >> ready ! This costs ca. 5 Euros and cleans as good as the original.
I mix 1 liter and use it for 15 records. Then it needs to be filtered and is good for another 15 vinyls. After this, new fluid is needed.
Cleaning 30 records, putting them into new inner sleeves takes an afternoon and some cups of coffee.
If you try a google search you´ll find sources for the Knosti machine and some more ideas for mixing the fluid yourself.
Nuff greetings,

Try this:
http://www.gruvglide.com/HOME.html
I've used it on really dirty records. It evens makes smudged ones look like NM. I'm sure a bunch of eBay folks uses this before they ship.
An aerosol like the one above solves the problem and I have yet to mess up a record with it.

Revival Records in Berwick Street will wet clean albums for £1 a disc. They kindly did a few for me FOC and I was impressed with the results. Don't know the *system* they use, but will find out nest time I am in there if anyone is interested.
