It depends what DJ it is and what sound their on.
I say "Pull it up selector at a shaka dance when i have to turn the tape over (it dont work for everyone) so you get the start of the tune.
Some say rewind where you rewind it fast getting the sound going backwards.
Nowadays it means something else.
Its like a group and the muscians give a little nod when their solo finishes or that the end of the tune is coming to a end.

They used to call it jack it up after the whole tune was played and wanted it again.

"Pull Up, Rewind, Play it from the top"

In dances from around the turn of the 80`s it meant to stop track once it had played 20/30 seconds take it back and play it from the top.

This originated back in the ska / rocksteady period, but back then it was when a new track had just been played and it mash up the dance the crowd would demand that it be played again straight away, "Put it on selector". This sometimes happened 3 or 4 times the same track get played back to back.

Puuuuuuuuuul uuuuuup selecta !

(sorry I'm just in need of a big sound system)

I think it's way older than mid 80s. I have in mind lyrics of skinhead reggae so late 60s saying "pull it up, pull it up". Moreover, the crowd asking to play it from the top when the track was good had begun long time before.

"Play it from the top to the very last drop !"

There many stories of ska hits that were played much more than twice. Not really "pull ups", because the tune was played completely from start to end, but many artists told me that the tunes people loved could be played more than ten times in a row !

There was also:
Jack It Up.
Itch It Up operator.
Willbert Wheely.
Come Again.
Rewind comes from the recording studios. When the vocalist want the track played again.
In DJ toasting it was used in dances.

Yes, rootsman you get it that 's what I had in mind by saying "pull up", only 20 or sec then play again from the start, and thank stepping razor too.
So in ska period the selector may play a tune several time but from the sart to the end not really "Pull Up" ?

I've heard rewinds done on vinyl inna dancehall. And I've tried them myself - and it's waaaaay harder than it looks!

On vinyl they only seem to sound right if there's NO vocal on the segment you rewind.

But the best way, probably, to do a rewind has to be with a reel to reel tape deck.

Difficult to rewind onna vinyl has it all down to hand speed coordination.

As you say, much easier on reel to reel tape deck.
