I would say Henry Junjo Lawes, he was well more crucial than Linval.

I would say I prefer Junjo since he came to define the sound of my favourite type of reggae and he also did this with some of the best productions it had to offer. My favourite producer of my favourite period basically.

Linval however was in his prime earlier than Junjo and I can't simply compare the dancehall vibes of Junjo to the hard hard roots rhythms of Linval in the late 70's. The dancehall productions of Linval are on par with Junjos he just wasn't as prolific and that's probably why I have to choose Junjo first.

It's a really hard choice though.

I'll go with Junjo.

I wonder if Linval was a more hands-on producer where Junjo might have been more of an executive producer.

Tough question, but...
as a reggae artist: Linval, but as a producer: Junjo - his work with Scientist and especially Barrington Levy is outstanding...

No doubt both were crucial in reggae development though...

Junjo definitely had the vibes down, but it seems like most of his riddims were recycled from Studio One. Linval's dancehall riddims are unique and more creative, and IMO the vibes are just as good. That's not to disparage Junjo at all, I like them both.

Not a tough question but a pretty useless one.

Junjo was great in that days, his Volcano Sound ruled Jamaica like no other, he had the best artists, singers and DJs alike, the best riddims played by the toughest band ever and he got his tracks mixed by the best engineer at the best studios. And he was a badman, so what?

Linval was and is a great singer, as a producer he also had the best artists, best backing band, engineers and studios.

Both men defined dancehall reggae in their own ways, history.

50-50 for me though If I had to decide for one it should be Linval because he sang and produce, he did both things perfectly...

Im feeling Junjo Lawes a little bit more than linval as far as Productions go.

listen to Eek a Mouse- Ski-Dip Vs. Mouseketeer.
Listen to Scientist- Rids the wolrd of Vampires Vs. meets Pac-man. etc...

All are great Lps but Junjo got something that linval just didn't have at that time IMO.

Maximum Respect to Linval Thompson as a singer & producer..& RIP to Mr. Henry Junjo Lawes

Junjo and Linval both used the same formula so the only difference was the voice of the singer.

Anyone who can tell the difference between a Junjo Production and a Linval Thompson Production that was Recorded at Channel One with Roots Radics, then mixed at Tubbys by Scientist,LIE YOU AH TELL!

To be fair, *Pacman* was a pretty dull set. *Meets the Space Invaders* and *Dub Landing Vol. 1* are much better Linval-Scientist LPs and very close in quality to *Vampires*.

Also, what's the story on Junjo and Scientist? They made some classic albums, but it seems like Scientist quit working with him after *Wins the World Cup*.
