Could you help me start off?

Post by Anirudh »

I just started listening. Could you tell me some must-listen-to bands? From oldskool to whatevers running now. Give me the name of the albums, songs or whatever!

I like dancehall mainly and anything similar.

I searched the forum but couldn't find something like this.

If you're into dancehall, maybe to ease into the reggae thing you should start off with some crossover artists. Try some Buju Banton (till shiloh has a good roots/dancehall mix) and Sizzla maybe.

4 recommended websites:

http://www.reggae-reviews.com/

Lots of reviews of reggae albums of all varieties. Not everyone has the same taste but it's a good site with loads of information.

http://www.reggae-vibes.com/

Excellent site with lots of reviews, load and loads of free streams and excellent interviews with vets. Just a great resource (big up to Teacher & Mr. T!).

http://www.ireggae.com/soundz.htm

Free streams of like 300 albums. Sound quality isn't great but it's an excellent, free way to sample the works of many great artists.

http:///www.youtube.com

Yep, youtube - probably the best of the bunch for sheer magnitude of content. Just an amazing resource as many reggae lovers have uploaded tunes - like having a virtual record player. Search for posters/channels like firebladerr1, wikidub, runitselectah, illplayguitar4yu - you can sample hundreds and hundreds of great artists and tunes. All of the above have generally excellent taste if I may say...

Don't waste your reggae dollars...try before you buy!

Start with Jackie Mittoo... The man had more to do with reggae music than most... The Showcase albums vol. 1-3 are great rockers era albums... Evening Time and Keep On Dancing are great Studio One records in the early reggae/rocksteady style..
