I read the following in the Dutch newspaper this morning and it really shocked me how such things can happen. They were just there to participate in a school building project, and helping the country. Now, the charity organizations has canceled *all* projects in Kenya and the participants of the organization all returning back to the Netherlands.
NAIROBI (AFP) - Five Dutch women participating in a charity project in western Kenya were gang-raped and robbed of their valuables, police said Monday.
The women, aged between 17 and 26, were attacked last Thursday in a school in Kakamega, around 250 kilometres (155 miles) northwest of the capital Nairobi, Western Province police chief Francis Munyambu told AFP.
He said the women were in Kenya to participate in a school building project.
"We understand they were gang-raped by a gang of about 10 men," Munyambu said, adding that two security guards at the project, a guide and a driver had been arrested.
"The guards who were on duty at the time said they were tied up and beaten before the gangsters proceeded to the house where the women were sleeping, but we believe these guards are accomplices," he added.
The gang also stole satellite phones, cameras, money and other valuables.
Munyambu said detectives were in contact with foreign exchange bureaus in the region to check if the attackers attempt to change some 600 euros stolen from the women.
Earlier this month, an elderly Canadian couple on a charity mission in Kenya's western Mount Elgon region was brutally attacked and robbed by gangsters who also sexually assaulted the wife of the 70-year-old Canadian man.
Two security guards were arrested over the July 9 attack.
"These guards are notorious in collaborating with gangsters to attack foreigners," Munyambu said.

I am disgusted, but not shocked. This is the material world at work where lust and greed rule.

Very sad situation, when good people try to help their fellow man, and are brutally attacked like this. I wish I could say I was shocked to hear this, but it is all too common and widespread:

Re: 5 Dutch women raped in western Kenya
From what I know - not much - on the subject of Kenya in its current state is that it is melting down. The last vestiges of colonialism have broken down and I'd imagine in that sort of atmosphere thugs will feel like they can do whatever they want.
I have always been wary of these aid organizations that send young and often foolish impressionable people to do 'good work' in 3rd world countries. If the organization in question cannot guarantee their safety these girls and boys should not be sent on foolish missions.
If I sound cynical - so be it. Not surprised, not shocked. This kind of shit happens in places where society has broken down.
Look at that Karadic clown. he is probably telling the truth when he says that Holbrooke agreed that if he disappeared he would not be held accountable for his war crimes. So much for the word of western powers now, then or at any time in history.
Expedience is an addiction with these politicians and normal people will finally give up hope and do horrible things just to vent their anger and frustration.
There has got to be more behind this story.

Yes, it can be hard to understand.
I can explain the metaphysics behind this and tell you why it doesn't mean that there isn't a God. But last time I expressed these views, about Karma and God giving us freedom of choice to do good or bad as we feel fit, a certain Roots-Archivist bit my head off...
But hey, do I care?
So here goes, again:
This is a material planet, not a spiritual one. So bad things will happen and I am afraid, that incredible as it sounds, we are all getting EXACTLY what we deserve.
Yes, not populist thought maybe and way out of step with 'modern' thinking. But I (and a few billion Hindus, Buddhists and some Jews and Christians even) happen to believe it's true all the same.
It all sounds so cruel until you understand the deeper picture and can accept that what happens here is actually not real, it's temporary and illusionary.
It isn't easy to explain in a few words on a forum. You need to do a lot of listening or reading to understand this viewpoint. But it does actually all make very good sense, logic even.
Even Isaac Newton knew that EACH and EVERY action has a reaction.
