Scientist - Dubbin With Horns

Post by Jonti »

Does anyone have this on vinyl/CD? Is it actually Scientist at the board, and is it worth getting?

[cover=2306,2663]

Thanks for guidance.

Hi Jonti,

I have this CD. Definitely worth getting,IMO.Produced and arranged by Nkrumah " Jah " Thomas.Sound engineers : Scientist,Peter Chemist,Barnabus,Solje and Sylvian Morris.Rhythm tracks mixed by Scientist,The Dub Chemist @ King Tubby`s Studio.Recorded at Channel One,Harry J and Dynamic Studios.

A very well recorded CD.Awesome bass and the tunes are excellent as well ! Usually got quite cheap,so it`s worth a punt.Go get it! (tu)

Thanks for the detailed recommendation, Trev! I've actually seen this on vinyl -- not CD -- so just hope the pressing on wax is to the same high standard. Anyway, it's cheap so it seems to be well worth a punt. Thanks again.

I don't have this but the credits sound like the same people involved in engineering/mixing as on Cry Freedom Dub - credited to Prince Far I - 1982 I think.
Tamoki Wambesi label? I rambled on about this elsewhere on this forum. Some love it - I'm sort of ambivalent about this mix of chefs and late dub style...

If the same I would pass on it but curious to know if it is significantly different (more lively/musical).

Let me know how it is Jonti!

Will do, ACE. This one's on Burning Sounds, though, nothing to do with Tamoki Wambesi. Seems like a pretty strong label: http://www.roots-archives.com/label/56

I finally got this LP today and... it's OK.

Technically no problems -- great sound quality, solid production, nice tunes.

But there are lots of things here and there that sound suspicious and which seem to ruin the album's potential. For example, I'm pretty sure there are some 1990s-vintage sound effects overdubbed in places, and a couple of tunes have what sound like tacked-on vocal tracks. Plus, it seems from the description on the back of the sleeve that all of the horns were added at a much later date -- hence the "Rhythm tracks mixed by Scientist" tag. Please correct me if I'm wrong with any of this, but the overall impression I get is that Dubbin With Horns could easily have been an Abrahams/Clocktower release -- i.e., it sounds a bit dodgy throughout. :(
