Re: Five cd albums that's crucial
It's always hard to narrow down to 5.
1. Burning Spear -- 100th Anniversary.
2. Horace Andy -- In The Light/In The Light Dub
3. Johnny Osbourne -- Fally Lover/Never Stop Fighting
4. Lee Perry -- Baffling Smoke Signal
5. Rico -- Roots To The Bone
One more for good measure:
6. Max Romeo -- Open The Iron Gate
Respect.

Respect to all the labels that come strong with quailty reissues - Pressure Sounds, Makasound, Trojan, Blood and Fire, etc...
I agree with dreadrecords, yu can't choose 5.
Recently, I've been spinning...
Earth and Stone - Kool Roots
Barry Brown - Rich Man Poor Man
Lee Perry - Black Ark Singles Selector
Yabby You - Jesus Dread
Rod Taylor - Ethiopian Kings
Next week it will be something different.
Respect everytime--

Re: Five cd albums that's crucial
It's easy to list albums, but almost impossible to compare them and thus rate, which album is better than which. Hence, I'll mention five albums I feel are absolutely essential, but in no particular order.
The Upsetters - 14 Dub Blackboard Jungle (Auralux CD)
The Congos - Heart Of The Congos (Blood & Fire CD)
Yabby You - Jesus Dread (Blood & Fire CD)
Hugh Mundell / Augustus Pablo - Africa Must Be Free By 1983 / Africa Dub (Greensleeves CD)
Burning Spear - Creation Rebel (Heartbeat CD)
Prince Alla & Junior Ross - I Can Hear The Children Singing (Blood & Fire CD)
So there, I listed six. But I feel that each and every one of these is a must to any reggae CD collection.
Of course, The Burning Spear compilation could be replaced by Soul Jazz's correspondent album, which some people probably prefer to the Heartbet anyway.
About the Alla / Ross set, I personally think that the Alla material here is generally a bit better than on his Only Love Can Conquer set. I find the rhythms slightly stronger, but the vocals I find much more stronger. The melodies are more distinctive and the tunes are overall catchier. There are some heavy, heavy tunes, that rival easily anything on the Only Love... set, namely Daniel (In The Lion's Den), Bosrah, Funeral, and Jah Jah Bird. If someone is wondering which one to buy, I'd definitely go with this set, as Alla's disc alone is better, but it contains the Junior Ross album as well, which is almost as heavy. The track Man From Zion, for instance, is nothing short of a scorcher.
The other albums that I listed are pretty much self-explanatory.
By the way, it would be nice to read WHY the albums that people listed are so essential. Listing only tends to be rather boring...
(Not that I did such a marvellous job, but see if you can do better

Re: Five cd albums that's crucial
I got mix up on the topic and for what reason people were posting. My list was neither crucial to complete my collection or in heavy rotation. Basically just a list of 'CD' only releases that I enjoy thoroughly.
