What costs do you have that all of us who put up mixes and podcasts don't also have?

You can post these mixes on leggorockers.com/downloads for FREE

(leaving me to pick up the tab for the server and the additional disk racks...)

I don't have a problem with people making money from their trade. But we do all need to be upfront about it.

Probably the same costs MightyZ. And your point is?

If you mean on a completely practical level, my show is exceptionally popular and does on average, even at 128kbps about 250-300 gigabytes of download a month, that all costs money and if you don't help out, then I'll pay the lot, podomatic isn't yet a registered charity as far as I'm aware! (Unfortunately)

I don't think I say,

'I have massive costs and you must pay',

or

'no one deserves to have their costs paid, but my show'

... I can only think that you feel asking for help is unreasonable?

If you are talking in wider terms about costs, then for me it goes like this.

I have very little time to myself each month, I'm busy supporting my wife, so she can look after our son during the day. I then come home and look after him, or cook, there's always something to do and by the time I finish, I'm beat and have a couple of hours before bed and the pattern repeats itself, on the weekends we get up to all the 'normal' stuff, cutting grass, cleaning house (rented by the way because we don't have the Dunza to buy)

... so finding the time to dedicate to organising, recording, editing and putting out the show is very hard to find. And when I find it I often have to negotiate the space in which to do so.

My wife quite rightly says, 'why should people get this completely free, when we're having to worry about the food bill and you're paying for the hosting, and people get it completely free.'

I get on average one donation per month, sometimes more, normally a significant ammount, and it's been a long time since I had to pay for the hosting, but it only just pays for it, literally leaving pennies in the Paypal account each month afterwards.

All this I do because I love Jamaican music and want you, the audience to hear more and more of it. %99.9 of you never contribute. But I'm still there, paying for it, negotiating with my wife for the time and space to do it, and fitting it in with everything else I have to get on with.

All this and I havn't bought a record in 4 months or more, because I can't afford to.

Do I sound like I have a chip on my shoulder?

Leggo, If anyone listens to the shows I am completely upfront about why I ask etc.

p.s to all and sundry, Some of you may know me as Bigmikey, some as bmd, some as Mike Murphy, this thing isn't an earner and as someone who has used his time to learn enough to contribute by designing and creating johnnyclarke.com (now offline) and Jamaicanlabelart.com as well as contribute to Roots Knotty Roots and The Rare Record Collector, all unpaid, I think my dues are in, don't you?

Heh - clearly struck a chord much deeper than I had intended. I apologise if I have offended you - that was not my intent. I just worry about RA becoming a commercial hunting ground.
I ran a Dance music radio station at my own cost for 5 years - so I do understand the costs involved. this too was very popular - the highest ranked independent station in its genre on live365 for over a year with a top ten ranking, competing with the major artists and labels own shows within that field. I never asked anyone for a penny because music has given me so much that I wanted to put something back.
I feel the same way about Reggae music - I have worked hard on creating and sharing Reggae music - I have contributed much to Roots Archives and written several reviews - I have asked for and got nothing for this (except a free Roots Archives T shirt!). I have spent several years creating music and have certainly come nowhere near recouping my costs - but like I said Reggae and music generally have enriched my life - I think I owe it to the music to give something back. My band the MightyZ All Stars used to do many free gigs (free to the audience and venue - but it cost me to do them!). Unfortunately, others in the band are less happy to do this and as I lost a singer over it and my new singer has to pay £27 return every time he comes to rehearse, I have had to go along with them and insist on paid gigs only - having said that we still don't really make money, we just manage to just about cover our costs.
To be fair though - I do understand why you were asking - I just worry like I said before about RA becoming commercialised and perhaps I over reacted - it is up to me whether I continue to work hard to spread the music and ask for no reward - but I do understand if you want to cover your costs. I just wonder whether this is the place to say it?

If that has not answered your 'What's your point MightyZ' question, it is simply this. I am worried that the world of Reggae music has become totally linked to money - like the rest of the (despicable) music business. For me Reggae is about spirituality, love and togetherness.
To promote that cause I don't mind that it costs me to contribute my bit - even though I have been financially buggered for about three years due to illness.
Hope that clears it up!

BTW bmd - I have tried to pm you to explain my position in a less public way as it seems to have angered you (not my intention) and I don't want this to become an argument - unfortunately I cannot find you in the users list to PM you - so again apologies if I have angered you - not my intent - I hope my position is made clear by the last post. This is, of course purely my personal opinion and perhaps I should have elaborated on my first post to make it clearer!
At this time I had just watched the Taekwondo fiasco on the Olympics this morning and was in a pretty indignant mood! ;)

On the original point about getting 'donations' for your show, it sounds like - reading between the lines - that it is bmd's wife, not the DJ himself, who is REALLY looking for money from all of this... :D

My offer to host DJ mix tapes - FOR FREE - still stands.

I can't, yet, offer quite the sophistication that podmatic can. But we are working hard to re-write the script to allow such things as downloadable stats, and to take out some of the many annoying bugs that came with the off-the-shelf engine.

MightyZ, many respects for your level headed ways... No it hasn't angered me, purely that somehow all of we, yourself included are somehow 'expected'? to contribute and receive nothing in return, though we all have outlay, an outlay that isn't always about money, sometimes, just the time spent etc. Reggae is only forwarded right now through our kind of free intervention, it certainly isn't some massive commercial force in the music world these days in my opinion.

Now I'm not saying that someone like I should benefit financially from all the work put in by those producers and original artists that we play on our progs, but, here's a case in point, I used to pass on enquiries to Johnny Clarke's UK management regarding request for dates worldwide by people who thought the site I created from scratch was run by or on the behalf of the man himself.

You can be absolutely certain that his management would, (or could) have benefitted from this.

p.s. Leggo, I conmpletely agree with my wife ;-)

To some Reggae is about one love, a spritual approach etc. and I respect that. To me though I feel this is an outdated and naive concept.. one that dissapeared when Cocaine not Marijuana became the prevalent Jamaican dancehall 'tipple'.
