Wailing Souls - Face The Devil

Post by mick d »

Greetings

I have read some negative reviews on this album. Looking on the archives reveals that this album is produced by linval thompson and backed by the roots radics. I have been extremely happy with all of the wailing souls material from the late 70s and early 80s. Face the Devil seems to have the formula of a classic record. Is it worth picking up?

Peace.

I posted a thread regarding this title some time ago. The truth about this title is somewhere between truthandrights and Fabroots opinions. The title in question is a re-issue of the Wailing Souls album titled "Wailing" which IMO is a good record which as you know was produced by Linval Thompson and mixed bt Scientist.

The problem I have with "Face the Devil" is that Trojan have made no effort with this release in keeping to the original format in that the dub tracks do not follow the vocal to which they belong ie "Face the Devil" dub follows the vocal to "Mr Bigmore", the dub to "Who da Waan Come" follow "Face the Devil" etc.

IMO it is a good title worth owning and the CD also has the bonus of three Viceroy`s tracks.

Pick it up and judge for yourself, its worth having till a decent release of the album comes along.

Respect

Dave

i was hard with saying "horrible", its not right of curse but i remember a deceiving day and abuse of the adjective without thinking too much lol, i remember that the sound if it was not digital then was very "clear" no? Whatever about the sound i remember for sure that i was very deceived compared to the other Wailing Souls albums, its prolly 1 or 2 songs not bad in but nothing really good, personnally i stop my collection of them when start this album...
For the viceroys tunes i cant remember if my cd version had it :/

I think it's very good wailing souls. Not digital to my ear. It's classic radics/scientist mix with good lyrics and vocals. I do agree however that it's a poor release in the sense that it's incomplete compared to the original LP "wailing" release and the uncredited addition of Viceroys tracks is weird. The Viceroy tracks are great but why are they there and why are they not credited. I would much rather have had the dub versions included like the original LP. Overall, it's still a great CD for the collection and until the proper re-issue of the "wailing" album comes out this fills a hole.

Thanks everyone. I am going to pick it up at some point. There are just too many albums I want to buy. Every time I go to the record store I have to limit my spending. You guys are awesome. I wish I could see your record collections.

Peace.

'Bandits taking over' is from the 'Fire House Rock' album. Still widely available.
