Linval, Gussie or Gregory?

Post by kalcidis »

Posted this on Chatty Mouth some days ago and figured I might as well post it here also.

Perhaps the questions posed in this thread are common knowledge but after having googled a bit I haven't found any answers.

Always loved the Linval Thompsons productions of the late 70's. Some really fantastic rocking and stepping roots rhythms with loads of incredible deejays on them. But there are some thing that always have bothered me ... who produced and mixed all the material?

The albums on Burning Sounds/Rockers with production credits by Linval such as the records by Mystic Eyes, Ranking Dread (Girls Fiesta), Prince Mohammed and so forth are of course produced by Linval. But then we have albums such as Trinity's Showcase (production by Gussie), Ranking Dread's Kunta Kinte Roots (productions by Burning Sounds Ltd.), Slum In Dub (prod by Gregory), Gregory Isaacs' Cool Ruler (produced by Gregory) that use many of the rhythms that Linval has credited to his name on various other albums ... this confuses me a bit. What exactly did Gregory, Gussie and Linval produce of those albums?

Also I wonder who the engineer is on the album Negrea Love Dub. It shares some rhythms with Gregorys' Cool Ruler and Slum In Dub (I think?). The engineer on the vocal album was Maxie but on the dub album the engineer was Prince Jammy. Since Negrea Love was mixed at King Tubby's according to the sleeve info I'm leaning toward Jammy doing the mix ... but I don't really recognize his style on it. I'm pretty certain it wasn't Tubby as it doesn't sound as him at all.

Slum In Dub was engineered by Prince Jammy according to the liner notes. So it does seem logical that it could be his work on Negrea In Love Dub too. I would rather think it's Jammy than Tubby at least. It would have been nice if it really was Maxies dub album though as I don't think he has a solo album to his name.

I agree with Leggo. The producing here involves making the album happen (finance being the biggest "issue") as opposed to any *knob twiddling*! :)

Still someone must have composed the music and I do think that Linval was the one.
