Dangerous Dub.
Sorry if this has been covered before. I searched the archives and didn't see anything right off, but there were lots of results.
Anyway, Scientist claims King Tubby never once worked with the Roots Radics, which makes a lot of sense if you consider the time periods. I think listening to Dangerous Dub it does sound like Roots Radics, but not necessarily Tubby. You think Greensleeves is, as Scientist claims, calling it Tubby so they don't have to pay him? Or does Scientist have sour grapes?

I read a lot of the interviews some time ago, and you really have to make up your own mind, bearing in mind that someone is not being truthful. Scientist recently won a lawsuit in france over this issue which would add some weight to his claim, and he does come across as being genuine. check www.myspace.com/jammyslies and decide for yourself. The real issue seems not to be Greensleeves but who is licensing the output to them and claiming the production rights.

Well I totally agree Leggo, that is how it seems to me also, although his death I would like to think is unconnected. I too feel the same about the 'King' title. There was/is only one King and one Prince in the Dub field, Tubby & Jammy respectively imo. Scientist claims that Jammy was not even present when Scientist V Prince Jammy was mixed. This seems genuine on two counts to me. Its clear on listening to the LP, that this is 99% Scientists work. Secondly on a clearer section of the phone recording when this is discussed, Scientist seems the more convincing of the two. But you cannot be sure I guess. Interesting thread

Re: king tubby (or scientist?) meets roots radics
King Tubby made his own riddims as well as getting musicians playing. Jammys made riddims but much later on mid 80`s. Scientist mixed and did not make riddims.
One thing they all forgot was the writers and composers of the songs and tunes that all three used. In copywrite control written by, composed by, as a mixer it is so much more differcult to say your the writer and composer. Why don`t Scientist bring out all his tunes himself, thats if he has the master tapes.
Now the real question is who has the master tapes of the original tune Johnny Osbourne, Barry Brown, and the vocals of the tunes used on the dub LPs.
Thats why they all thought Perry distroyed his master tapes in Black Ark Studio when it burnt down.
They may hold the publishing rights but they don`t own the master tapes. Where did all the King Tubby master tapes go?
I also thing its wrong when its labeled King Tubby yet Tubby was not in the studio and had no part of it except it is his studio, but Tubby can only get the Tubby sound not the equipment even though he built it.
So Scientist why don`t you just release your music from the past with the overseen through the process, either you don`t have your master tapes or its something that happened years ago where you somehow got fooled into giving away the master tapes. only they will know.
Also people with talent just make more music so if you got ripped off you just do another tune. They can rip the tune off but they aint getting no master tapes.
These days the music industry is a hobby (no money in it these days) where as it used to be a trade, so I just treat the modern music industry as a hobby.
What is needed is some music thats music these days its all computerized which is different than digi. 4 bar loops boring dubs either too much mixing or not enough. From the year 2000 we have been starved of proper reggae music and need to get back to proper roots music. You know when Spain, Japan, Italy, Brazil are making better reggae than the UK and JA.
Scientist why dont you come out with your dub LPs part 2 is it cos you will get sued? Its always better to be sued than sue other people. Hustle dem a huslter.
Naz - Do You Hate Me Now single that got him on his way in Hip Hop. He never rapped that tune cos he`s never sounded the same after that. There was 4 versions of the tune cussing the corpirates and Naz`s record company. A lot of these rappers never made their first tune.
Where are the King Tubby Master Tapes? Where are Scientist master tapes? In fact where are anyones master tapes? I thought that would be the most important thing in the music biz and forget about going on television and doing interviews.
peace

Re: king tubby (or scientist?) meets roots radics
Like so many JA studios you had to be careful who you let in the studio. Many a time when the boss was not there someone would run off the master tapes and release the tune before the boss got back. Then its who stole the master tape!!
Like with most things in poverty nothing is written down accounts, contracts or any of that business stuff. They would pay (if they`re lucky) the musicians one flat rate, no royaltes, thats it.
Not for one instance do I believe the master tapes don`t exsist or got wiped off.

If there are no master tapes (Ampex) in exsistance then there is no copywrite ownership or any legal right to the music until the masters turn up, if they don`t then its all second hand runnings.
So who has the metal stampers?

Good words Dave K & Leggo. It should be pointed out though that this was a Hypothesis regarding Tubby's death and the post in the middle by THE TRUTH was stated.

Thanks for the crucial contribution Dave.
No hearsay.
I'll try your tips to distinguish a dub mixed at Tubbys!
(So, there were no other studios with less than 16 track in jamaica in the ~late 70's-early 80's period?)

Perfect example of using a persons name for marketing a record that was not produced or mixed by them. See also; tons of Lee Perry releases on the Rhino UK, Langoon, Culture Press etc. labels.stepping razor wrote:Horace Andy - The King Tubby Tapes LP
