What Is Meant By `A Bogus` Release?
I thought I would expand on the subject.
There are many ways people call releases bogus: Artists that weren`t on the record credited, A different label bringing a LP out, Not what is says on the tin, suethenames (pseudonyms), digital re-mastered, remixed, re-releasing an LP and putting more extra tracks to fill out the CD.

Bogus means they didn't have the rights to put it out.
At least that is what I think, as English is not my native language.

That's also what I always thought about a bogus release, besides the poor sound quality.Survival wrote:Bogus means they didn't have the rights to put it out.

'Bogus' to me is what Stepping Razor wrote ( wrong credits-artists): Artists that weren`t on the record credited, Not what is says on the tin, suethenames (pseudonyms), remixed.
'Bootleg' to me is: not having the rights, pirate- illegal release but crediting the right artists, a different label putting out an LP without the licensing.
Digital re-mastering is ok. Every CD is digitally remastered anyway. Dodgy sound quality is a different matter altogether.
And then you have also the bootleg and bogus releases...both ! Quite a few in Jamaican music!
And also the even more common legal releases with wrong credits.
Of course, this is just how I call them ( not only in english).
I don't care much about the official dictionary definition, is just music slang.

I just notice that so many people use the word `bogus` and don`t say why. Bogus means fake and most of the time it`s used in the wrong context. Official, unofficial, ripped off, because it maybe mis-labelled (which a lot of reggae is) don`t mean the whole thing is fake `bogus`, it can be very misleading.

If I ask whether a release is 'bogus', it's usually because of the slightly dodgy reputation which, for whatever reason, it has gained.
As you say, 'bogus' can mean any number of things, which is why it's really helpful when people with greater knowledge are able to explain the full story behind the origins of a possibly 'bogus' release.

I keep hearing the word used, all it does is deny the product in question exsists at all, without an explanation of why!!
Of course we know what the word `bogus` means it`s in the dictionary, but how does that relate in the context of how the word is used so wrongly, which gives it no meaning so `bogus` is a bogus word to use to explain a product.

Official, bootleg, not licensed, credits missing, credits wrong, licensed and changed from the original by remixed, remastered, if it`s not a record but a CD, second press, third press, UK press not JA press from the original, different label than the original, in fact anything thats not the original first press issue got at the time it came out, tracks that are shorter than the original, releases with different track order and extra tracks from the original, different format 7 inch, 10 inch, 12 inch, LP, CD, Mp3, Wave, the list goes on and on . . .
