A Video to Understand the diff btw ONE DROP - ROCKERS - DANCEHALL

Post by Litelet »

Hi bredrens,

as its a recurrent question that seem to get little satisfaction in the answers, cause its hard to describe sounds with words, so Ive tryed to explain that with a "video", in fact text, that comment the music.

With different examples for

One Drop
Rockers (Steppers)
Dancehall

Hope it'll helps a bit, it is kindly hosted on Leggo's website

very nice video and selection!
it really helps understanding, even though I still think that defining the different styles and classifying songs is a difficult, and maybe even needless, matter. The players of instruments back then just played what they felt was good sounding, the style-naming came after.
I can enjoy all of them and to me it doesn't matter what style is a particular tune.
but anyway, always nice to see (and hear) the evolution in reggae music. Thx

irie!

For sure, the main use, imo, is...

-to date the records, it really gets easy with that...
-to notice that maybe, your favourites tunes all stick with a common drumbeat, cause it changes the feeling... Before knowing it, I was not aware that the one drop drumbeat had a strong impact on my musical pleasure.

But knowing that should not change your way of listening, of course.

Its a bit like knowing if its rare or not, its sometime hard not to take it in account, even if you shouldnt. At first I feared to analyse the music with such criterias, thinking it could corrupt my listening, but I realise now that it helped me a lot to hear variations I hadnt noticed and helped me getting deeper in the sound.

Very nice video!I hope you don't mind if i post the link to Leggo's website in other italian forum...

Now an answer to the people that select roots music...

You think that in a selection is possible to jump from one drop to rockers to dancehall or you select first one drop , than rockers and than dancehall/rub a dub in cronologic order??

Me personaly like to mix some one drop style with rockers...but , except few 80's tune , i don't like mix rub a dub with 70's style...first 70's and after 80's

What's your idea?

sorry for bad english , i hope is understandable :)

Yeah breda

I personnally choose the selection with only the "vibe" in mind, not the drumbeat, but usually, dancehall has an apart vibe, with a cleaner sound and a different power so I tend to select it seperately, except a few deep early dancehall tunes...

Deep jamaican rockers and one drop mix well, as well as some Wackies sound, but heavy UK steppers do not, imo...
It depends of the mood of the people too... A rockers or early dancehall usually bring some fresh motivation in the dancehall while one drops that have a slower rythmic have to be kept for when the mood is ready for, deep and open to the sound itself...

Its like red and white wine! One drop would be the red one for me... You open it when you want to taste something deep, but accept to get ina slow mood... While white wine usually is better for an energetic social vibe... Not a really "rasta" comparison for sure!...

But anyway, I dont feel like I should follow the years of appearance in any selection, like I did in the video.

Respects

Of course they are roots!
But roots doesnt refer to a particular drumbeat, only the lyrical content or overall musical feeling (generally minor). Thoses categories presented here are focused on the drumbeat and are relative to periods of reggae in jamaica...

More or less...

up to 76 --> one drop drumbeat
77-80 --> rockers drumbeat
81 --> now dancehall drumbeat

For some reason it doesn't allow me to download the video. Am I supposed to click on download or am I doing something wrong?
