Next book to read?

Well I have just finished reading "the bible" - Rough Guide to Reggae (and its accompanying mini book Rough Guide to 100 CD's) - and I would like to know what is the next definitive book that I should be looking for. Obviously I am interested in 70's vintage roots/dub and would like a book that also contains a list of recommended albums to buy.

Bass Culture by Lloyd Bradley.There's nothing to say other than it is very very very good.

"People Funny Boy" the Lee Perry biography by David Katz is a great read. It's not a small book and covers much more than just Lee Perry's life. Plenty of overlaps into the lives of other artists and producers, as well as jamaican culture and musical history.

Is there any other reference book with an extensive list of recommended LP's (similar to the Rough Guide set)?

Dave Thompson 'Reggae & Caribbean Music' is pretty good. Published by Backbeat Books. 2002. ISBN 0-87930-655-6.
Lots of reviews, ratings and mini-biogs. etc. Good companion to 'Rough Guide' and it was only a quid from Music Zone a few years ago

David Katz 'Solid Foundation' Very, very good.

I also recommend Lloyd Bradley's book 'Bass Culture' (US title 'This is Reggae Music' I have no idea why)

You just finished reading the Reggae Rough Guide. Oh no you didn't! you'll be going back to that quite a lot I expect!
I'm on my third copy. Gave the previous two away to people who would benefit from the wizdom therein. And I would encourage you to do the same! If it is ever completely updated it should assume biblical proportions and run to a couple of thousand pages! Well...I can dream...

Written during the 70's and may or may not be in print or available are:

Reggae Bloodlines (was in print a few years ago when I bought it - more interesting because it is from the time rather than for details, facts etc.)
Reggae International - out of print and outdated though interesting to read as an account written while 70s stuff was happening. I paid too much money for copy when I could afford to do so...

I'm interested in the one about the Upsetters which just came out though I can't remember the name of it - the general thrust of it being the story behind Marley's backing band... (by Roger Steffens I think)

I don't want to go all negative here but I have serious reservations about Michael Veal's Dub book.

Thanks for the great list! I just found a copy of the David Katz book but WOW - what a discrepancy of prices for an out of print book. I saw all different prices - even up to $150. Makes you laugh what a little internet sleuthing will find - I grabbed a new copy at $9.50 !!!

JUST got a copy of "Bass Culture" by Lloyd Bradley -- SMOKIN so far! The title change for US (i got mine in toronto, so CA change too?) is a mystery...
I also just got a copy of The Trojan UK book, reads like an encyclopedia... NICE!

Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae by David katz.loads of interviews and stories, a sort of outakes version from people funny boy.
also Reggae Routes (Paperback)
by Kevin O'Brien-Chang.i think this one is actualy written by jamacians
