It's because the mastering engineer (the famous Tom Moulton) who could dig into the Studio One vaults tried on some songs to put together the two master tapes, the one with the vocals (full riddim + vocals, on 2 tracks) and the one that had only the original riddim on it (also on 2 tracks). It is very difficult to synchronize two different tapes with the same music... The resulting mix of the two tapes was some sort of stereophonic...
It's particularly noticeable on the Heptones' "In Love With You" LP.

All very interesting, though the JA stereo angle is off the point I was making.
I'll keep on wondering!
