Upsetting organ

Post by blackbeltjones »

This is one of the coolest clips from the documentary "Roots Rock Reggae". It's an improvised song recorded by Scratch featuring the Upsetters, Junior Murvin, a couple of Heptones, and the Congos. Completely epic. But on to the question. I've been wanting to buy a decent organ for playing reggae but cannot afford a classic Hammond organ. Does anyone know the type of organ used in this video? You can get a decent view of it at 1:32 and then again at 3:03. Or does anyone know of a more affordable and smaller version of a vintage Hammond organ? Thanks!

It looks like a Vox continental more than a Farfisa.
I cannot hear Hammonds on Black Ark productions.
Normally is either acoustic and electric pianos (sometimes used for organ type shuffling, like they did in the UK reggae productions.

I think you're right! I just looked at pictures of Vox continentals and it looks like the one in the video! Do you know if the color switch on the keys changes the pitch of the notes (for instance is a black G key now a G flat or sharp?) Thanks a ton!

If you can afford a real vintage Hammond and have the space for it, I wish you all the best. From the little I know you have to be careful with these. Some of them can be way out of tune and also mechanically trashed after years of (ab)use.
Also, not all Hammonds are alike. I think the B3 is probably the one you might be looking for. You also have to consider the fact that part of the Hammond sound is the Leslie rotary speakers.
I have neither the money nor the space (or the natural ability!!!) and have been getting by with Native Instruments B4 software for a few years

Includes Farfisa, Vox and Harmonium emulation too.

There are also other draw bar / tone wheel organ emulations out there, some of them free - if you can use VSTs.

There are no instances of Hammonds that I'm aware of in any Black Ark productions.

Not sure what you mean about the color switch - keys...the colors of the keys in some of the Voxs or Farfisas - either or both, can't remember right now - are reversed so that the black keys are white and the white keys are black. It is just a color thing and does not change the pitch of the keys. That would be pure insanity and commercial suicide akin to the square wheel!
