i am with acetone on arkology, kinda disappointing especially if youve kept up on the ark over the years and esp the island years.

ive been listening to the three complete upsetter singles sets that trojan put out. they were on vinyl at one point but not sure if they are available anymore in any form, but they collected up all the upsetter singles from trojans subsidiary upsetter label. a lot of kinda cheesy organ instrumentals but they start sounding nice after awhile, not the heavy black ark sound but you can see where it came from. a lot of riddims sound like "poppatop" but theres some real cool stuff on them as well.

but as others said, open the gate and build the ark are really the heart of the matter. devine madness not so much in my book but the other two pressure sounds upsetter comps are killer too.

buzzlulu - go for Baffling Smoke Signal. I've had some of the Black Ark anthologies over time, but didn't listen them much. Recently picked up BSS and it touched off a major case of Scratch Fever. Now (most of) the other stuff sounds a lot nicer too.

I'd second the Baffling Smoke Signal recommendation.

Excellent compilation.

Were there multiple volumes of Baffling Smoke Signal? The current one on Amazon lists volume 3.

It's the third of a series called the Upsetter Shop.
First volume is Upsetter in Dub, mostly (or all) Black Ark stuff. Second is pre-Ark from 1969-73. So in true Upsetting style, there's no obvious connection between the three, but maybe something deep underneath.

i believe there were two now obscure releases on esoldun or some other sketch label back in the late 80s called "upsetter record shop" vol 1 & 2, containing marley tracks and dub versions and other rarities...maybe thats where this "vol 3" thing came from?

could be jah bill, who knows? but there's three on Heartbeat. good descriptions on artistdirect.com. He says Vol. 1 has some late Randy's tracks, so it's not all Black Ark.

You're mixing these two

Totally different. Btw (bob marley instumentals not dubs. Dub wasn't invented until 1973.
