Don't worry Trev, you are in good company. Bob Marley covered it, so he must have known. And so did the Silvertones.
So much talent... such dodgy taste!

Thanks to this thread , I dragged out " A Long Way - Junior Byles " on Rhino CD , which has the track in question , on it ! And the Silvertones CD also .( Not to keen on this one , btw ) .
This has prompted a whole Sunday afternoon listening to loads of Junior " Chubby " Byles . Excellent . What a soulful , aching voice !!!!

Yeah, The Silvertones is a bit ordinary altho there are some tunes on the album I like, such as... Rock me In Your Soul and Soul Sister. And I suppose the roots track everyone loves, Rejoice.AnorakTrev wrote:Thanks to this thread , I dragged out " A Long Way - Junior Byles " on Rhino CD , which has the track in question , on it ! I'd imagine there were more reggae versions of the Archies' monster - written by Neil Diamond by the way (your anorak is starting to fit me!). As a writer he was quite an inadvertant contributor to reggae: Red Red Wine (Tony Tribe), Holly Holy (John Holt, Mittoo, Prince Buster several versions, Willie Lindo), I Am I Said and Sweet Caroline (Bunny Rugs Clarke), I'm A Believer (Tyrone Taylor) and no doubt a lot more. He apparently does Red Red Wine live in a UB40 style. Jah help us!
As for Junior Byles, not all his records were fantastic but he was undoubtedly totally sincere, and when he was on top form he outshone everybody. Ever hear a record that made slavery more poignant than "A Place Called Africa"? Utterly brilliant. And his singing, as you say, spoke volumes, it's truly heartfeltEven on some of his lesser records, like "Last Of The Love Songs", you know he means it: he was splitting up from his wife at the time.
