flashman and leggo:
i know what you're talkinf about .....
a list of originals i once had:
Rastafari Dub
Chant down Babylon
Beware
Kaya Dub (Maya Dread)
Rockers almighty dub (1st press with the fat cover)
a big bunch of singles (DIP etc. ...)
most of it is now re-released on CD, but i was an idiot selling all this stuff. But hey - i am Norman the Gambler ! Sometimes you loose, sometimes you have no luck ...

Re: Why does one like to own "original press" reggae LP's?
I prefer originals because the vinyl often is thicker, it is of better pressing quality. It sounds better. Even the sleeves and labels are manufactured in a better way.
It gives me a different feel to have an original in my hands than a current re.
Often, I didn´t buy the re although it´s chaeper. Nowadays - if you´re lucky - you can grab an EX cond. original for a fair price from the us market.

Why originals?
What kind of question is that anyway?!
Ridiculous.
I am a collector of music in the first place and I want the 'real' thing. Copies were the next best thing to listen to. In earlier times they came on cassettes or more recently on cdrs. Bad repressings are worse, either on vinyl or any other scource.
#o!%yukyuk-mp3 will never EVER get to me.

Well I know the downside of collecting as well:
- After 25 years the outer sleeves do not have the same color anymore (especially red colors get a pink look).
- The inner sleeves are yellow instead of white (I am sure it was white when I bought it).
- It is shocking to hear that an album that I used to play say every year, now is hanging... on its' 25th anniversary.
Yep, I am aways 40 years old now, drowning myself into nostalgia... loving music nobody remembers anymore. Having a pile of records now, when sold on e-bay could provide me with a nice fortune (reggae as investment, what a ridicolous idea, it's ghetto music).
Glad my wife still loves me, (well I hope).
