Jazz too. I've got a few of these great 70's Black Saint label lps (Billy Harper, WSQ) in the queue, but they keep getting pushed back time and time again.

must go to bed - but Flashman thanks...
I used to have time to really listen to various different forms of music - I've been spending more time on making music and finding myself making time to listen - and it all ends up being a reggae dub cycle. Been this way for a few years and I'm not insane yet! (others may have different opinions!)
Whatever else I listen to really has to be in the pop tune time frame of 4 minutes (+ extended/disco cork mix etc) otherwise it doesn't get a fair hearing.

Tried putting some classical stuff on my iPod. Pointless. Never find the time or frame of mind to hear it properly. Used to go to the Opera every once in a while - time, money.

Nah...

Give me likka dub music right, ya suh, tonight!

AnorakTrev wrote:Most of the people who listen to reggae , listen on a " system " capable of hearing the bass ! Just can`t get that via mp3 . ( I stand to be corrected on that point ) Also , we actually LISTEN to what we play , as opposed to it being in the background . Discuss !!
I know Luddism is popular on this forum but I can't let misinformation like this stand. MP3 encoding at typical bitrates does not impact bass in a detectable manner. I guarantee nobody can tell the difference between a bassline taken directly from vinyl or CD and the same one encoded to MP3.

As leggorocker will testify , I am certainly no " luddite " when it comes to collecting music . For me , it`s the tune that counts , not the format ! Having a VERY good CD player I am well aware that bass can be got from digital sources . ( Thanks Rootsman :D ). My mp3 listening has been via my daughters i-pod Touch , linked via phono adaptors to my pre-amp .

leggorocker has a point about " unheard " frequencies . I have listened to so-called supertweeters . These seem to have an effect on the WHOLE sound , not just at bat-like frequencies . Even the bass seems to sound better , how , why I don`t know . Some say that this is down to psycho-acoustics . Parts of the ear mechanism thrummimg in harmonics with the body they are located in !

i think, in my opinion, to answer the original question---
is that the "others" simply haven't listened enough, and still don't listen enough.
but that being said- others can say the same about other kinds of music as well.
to some people, all jazz sounds the same. and that just ain't true at all.
i'm wishing some of my music wasn't obtained via mp3 format. it's actually kind of new to me, and although you can hear the compressed difference...i am glad it is available since i am a poor man and in no way could i afford to keep up my musical addiction.
i lost all of my wax in 1990 in a fire and haven't been after any since for various reasons in life.
now it's all cd. i do have about 10 records still but no longer have a turntable. boo!

Leggo, be kind to yourself. Build that underground bunker you have been thinking about.

Now that the world is being vigilantly protected against terriers (thanks to ludicrous legislation on both sides of the atlantic) and you have nothing to worry about on that front (apart from the islamic war front on your doorstep !?) your nucular stilee bunker can be efficiently utilized to protect your vinyl collection. Get rid of all of the canned food and you and your family AND your records will have enough space to survive indefinitely...until the food runs out...now where was I going with this?

Play the records and enjoy. 'Worry makes you a fool forever' (Rip Rig and Panic)

...and back on topic - reggae lovers are usually contemplative people by nature and listen harder and dig deeper - music MEANS a 'ole 'eap to me and reggae always comes up with new fresh meaning, vocal, DJ, Dubwise or otherwise.

It means something.

And I have to say - the level of typing/writing ability on this forum is outstanding. I don't know if everyone here is posting stone cold sober but I can tell that like the music, there is the earnest intent to get the message across. Commendable.
Try a rock guitar site for comparison - DOH!
