I'm having a look/listen to that link.
This isn't really my time in JA music, but the despite the poor sound quality i can hear it is a pretty tuff riddim and quite like it.
I have to agree that the timing of the vocal sound effects is poor. To be effective they should really accent the main vocal rather than interrupt. Whose idea was that?

Really has a bit of a ska feel to it with the sound effects though the riddim is of course of its time...

But there's a long history of this kind of vocalizing in JA music and I wouldn't dismiss it at all. Much to hear and learn still for me.

So my question is - is Early B Buro Banton?

No, two different DJs. While both are good, in my opinion, Buro strikes me as a good example of the typical DJ of the period. Early B, on the other hand, is one of the best lyricists (among DJs) ever, again, my opinion. But who else has ever Djd about Shakespeare plays? Or laid out a whole, followable recipe?

Oh, as for the timing of lickshots sounds being interruptions, I'd say if you're at all used to listening to sound tapes, it's pretty commonplace to have that kind of interruption going on. I can't say whether I like it or not, it's just sort of standard, I guess. I see it as expressing excitement at the exact moment it's felt, without regard for how it sounds to someone trying to actually listen to the song. It's spontaneous hype!

When i remember right one of the two guys became quite popular because he was able to pronounce names in between the gunshots. So if you would like to make a special request to any posse you could make it inna style & fashion with "mashinegun fire an ting"..
Theres more about that in Beth Lessers "Dancehall Book" which i lent to a friend so i can't look it up right now..
I definetly wouldn't want to listen to an LP with these effects but you gotta love the jamaican "weirdness"..

there once was a lp called "early B meets the doctor", from memory a very nice set - and i think it was a junjo production but the label was tuff gong or connected to them ? never seen this again.
