Dubsteppers
Any dubstep fans on the board? Been bit by the bug about 3 years ago and haven't looked back. Went to a club in NYC and the bass literally punched me in the gut! Reminds me of the early jungle/drum and bass days.

At least dubstep shows that young people still care about bass. And dubstep producers like Burial even seem to have a great knowledge of roots and early dub, so it can't be an entirely bad thing - even if it doesn't appeal to you personally, it's got to be a million miles better than pop/house/whatever.

All fair points, Leggo. Of course I'm not saying that dubstep is some kind of worthy substitute for the classic stuff (I'm not even a dubstep fan, btw), but I think it deserves a bit of respect as a bass-driven, dub-influenced genre.

Re: Dubsteppers
When Dubstep first came on the scene I really wasn't feeling it all, it really evolved from UK Garage but over the years the Dub influence has really taken over and you now have some great artists making some great tunes:
Rusko
Caspa
Skream
Goth-Trad
Kode 9
and so on and so forth. It will never over take my love of classic Roots and dub but I do listen to it on a fairly regular basis. The thing with Dubstep is it's a very DJ orientated genre, you can't just listen to it with out it being mixed if you ask me, there is also something very satisfying with jumping on the decks and mashing up a few tunes, really gives your speakers a work out though.

Re: Dubsteppers
I`ve noticed lots of styles of dubstep: Fast beats and bass, Slow beats & bass. Ambiant sounding stuff that`s far out that it sounds unfinished. Hip hop beats with reggae tunes mixed in and a few words of toasting.
Dubstep needs to slow down in pace and get more musical with more musical instrumentation, I know it`s done on digital instruments (beat boxes and keyboard), but still it could be layered better with actual tunes with a tune in it. It needs to slow down for vocals, you can`t sing to something that fast!!
When hip-hop turned into wrap (rap). Slow rap, fast rap, gangstar rap, I see dubstep as a combination of rhythms beat boxes and bass combined with melody`s such as reggae and early hip hop with actual tunes and songs, because hip hop and reggae dubs are tunes mixed from the vocal cut called a version.

Re: Dubsteppers
I wouldn't go as far to say the Dubstep lot lacks talent. They may produce numbers on computer programs but at least they are keeping the dubplate pressing plants in business. I can't say the same for current reggae artists in the game.
I'm sure many of you went to Jungle/Drum + Bass events of the 1990s. The bass during the gigs was heavy indeed, but this new scene takes bass to another level.
It's all bass culture to me.
