Akabu - African woman abroad

Post by benjamin »

I just wanted to bring a little highlight on this amazing roots album produced by mikey dread. That's a great sound I never hear about, wonderfull deep bass lines, strictly roots compositions and very nice female voice.
And very interesting thing, it seems all the musicians are woman, which is very unusual in reggae, and most of them have french names (paulette, valerie, nathalie, etc.). Anyone has more info about the musicians. nd why didn't Akabu record more albums, this one is a crucial one IMO.
All comments welcome.

Yeah absolutely crucial deep roots stuff. The song Ethiopians Live it kills everything with its bass thunder that start likkle after the vocal...

As you said Mikey Dred prod, and Mad Prof on soundboard, a very special roots collaboration.

Their first name... as feat on the LP,*Mwanamke Mwfrika*, is not easy to type and find, maybe its why its still a very unknown LP.

The next releases of "Akabu" have absolutely not the same feel... I havent found anything else interesting.

*Two more tracks, recorded in Germany, were also released on a compilation album called 'People Unite' on a label of the same name.*

Anybody heard that, is it worth picking?

Thanks

"In Progress" is a wicked comp. and the African Woman tracks on it are just as crucial as on the S/T LP. "Warrior Queen" stands out to me. IMHO The tracks on this comp. by Abacush (another wicked all-female reggae group)are top shelf! aDam

PS My copy of this record came with a People Unite Publications ltd., promotional leaflet...anybody else get this?
