A Chicago ballad and blues singer whose churchy style gained success in the `50s culminating in a massive hit for VeeJay in 1958 with "You Can Make It If You Try".

ALBERT AMMONS:
One of boogie-woogie`s most influential piano originators. Early associate of Pinetop Smith and Meade Dux Lewis. Moved to NYC in `30s and took the boogie to white society (Carnegie Hall). Recorded prolifically `till death in 1949.

GENE AMMONS:
Jazz and R&B saxman, son of Albert Ammons. Played with King Kolax, Billy Eckstine and Woody Herman in `40s, Sonny Stitt in `50s. His honking blues and sweet ballads gave `Jug` big sellers with Prestige Records. Came back with new albums recently after prison stint.

GLADSTONE ANDERSON:
Keyboard man and arranger in the group of Jamaican musicians tagged "The All Stars" because of the amount of session work they do for local and foreign artists. Has made some worthwhile singles with Stranger Cole as Stranger & Glady notably "Seeing Is Knowing" "Drummer Roach" "Don`t Give Up The Fight" and "Conqueror".

MARION ANDERSON:
One of gospel music`s greats, carrying on the concert hall tradition with the death of Mahalia and Clara. Her exultant vocals on mainly traditional devotional numbers can be heard on numerous albums.

One of gospel`s most uninhibited sisters, her wailing and a hollering of the Lord`s praises, with or without her Andrewettes, has made her a gospel super star while her numerous albums on Songbird are consistent ghetto sellers.

LEE ANDREWS:
Lee Andrews & The Hearts made some beautiful doowop records in the `50s, including "Teardrops" and "Try The Impossible". Lee Mathis type voice was less suited to the soul he tried to record in the `60s.

RUBY ANDREWS:
Detroit singer with an extraordinary soul-blazing style and rhythmically complex songs, Ruby obtained her biggest hit on Zodiac in 1967 with "Cassanova". Several others clicked for her including "Everybody Saw You".
