silk screen covers

Post by Jah Chicken »

Hello My Friends,
Many original LP pressings seem to be contained in a cover with silk screened art. The question I ask here has two parts:

1. What are some common sought after original LP or 12" pressings that we should expect to have a silk screened cover (I've omitted 7#'s with silk screen covers because I believe they are very uncommon)?

2. What is the most reliable way to recognize a silk screened cover?

With regards to question #1 I have noticed that, amongst others, "The Heart of the Congos" OG press usually boasts an original silk screen cover for the authentic copy. With regards to question #2 would the feeling of a dynamic texture consistent with the cover art be representative of a silk screened cover? Is there a better way to recognize it?

Thanks for reading this!

Praises,
Jah Chicken

What about [cover=1774,2087] which has a slight indentation where the printing is, on the very thick card board cover?

There are two different ways of silk screen printing for record covers.
1. Straight onto the cover, each cover done seperate.
2. Silk screen art work that was then printed onto the cover.

so the second is really silkscreen, but a picture of silkscreen...an in order to make the screen in the first place, you must go through the photo emulsion process from an original piece of art, so you're better off just printing from that.
