On the reggae covers with silk screen printing (either staight on the cover or printing from silk screen artwork) that there is not much detail, usually blocks of colour.

stepping razor - you seem to be a very knowledgable person judging from your posts!.. Can you please explain how you print 'from silk screen artwork' onto another surface?

Also, please explain why you might see a difference in the colour between the 1st & the 500th cover.. is yellow ink gradually added to the blue ink to make it greener as you go along?

Usually they draw a piece of artwork in black, the outline and detail onto paper, card, then they put it over a silk screen and pin out the outline with blocks. Then they do one template and silk screen the artwork with colour. Then at some point it goes to the printers (money permitting).

If it is a straight run of silk screen printing on covers then you will get a difference in colours and yes you will have to add more ink primary colours red, blue, green to make other colours and shades of colours.

letterpress causes indentation.
lithographic does not. If it does there is a big problem with the press!

Lithographic printing will have a rose pattern of dots.
Silkscreen can also but with much larger dots and more crude effect.
Silkscreen is mostly for flat/solid colour.
Lithographic is traditionally Cyan Magenta Yellow to achieve the full color spectrum though there are more recent multiple color variations on this for a wider gamut.
JA album covers most likely to be litho I would say...some silkscreen probably, letterpress not much...
