I just recently heard Sinead O'Connor's version of Vampire with Sly and Robbie and frankly I thought it was horrible!

I can't think of any instance where such collaborations have been artistically successful. Commercially successful yes, but...

Of course I could be wrong.

Robert Palmer did that song (River?) at the Black Ark. It is a long time since I listened to it so I don't remember it well, but it was not the worst thing I ever heard - but really only because the Black Ark (unfinished) backing and production saves it somewhat.

Seems generally to be not such a great idea. The reggae artist/musician/producer will likely jump at the $$$ and the non-reggae artist/record company will probably expect to lay the money down, fly into JA for a few days - voice the tracks and fly out again. Wham, bam, thank you ma'am. No time to build an artistic relationship or work on creative ideas.

I'm interested to hear of any success stories (artistic/creative of course!)

Still Moving To Me - Toots Hibbert & Willie Nelson

Looks odd on paper, but it works extremely well.

I bought a 7" with Walk & Don´t Look Back...but it´s not Tosh or Jagger....someone else in the old 70`s style....really tuff tune, but I can´t remember who the artist is...grrr.

Also like Carlos Santana performing live with the Caribbean All Stars - especially when they play Satta Massa Gana - whoaah Carlos´ solo make me shiver!

And what about Hux Brown, Jackie Jackson and The Dynamic Studio session band backing Paul Simon's "Mother & Child Reunion"? Probably the first time many outside of Jamaica heard the "stuttering guitar style".

I think that there is an assumption that a non-reggae musician dilutes something pure, but when you put musicians in a room together, they can speak their own language and work things out in ways that can't easily be articulated.

@Dave K - true, but it seems it doesn't always happen that the musicians/singers actually do as you describe. and even then, spending the time is not a guarantee of producing of merit...

full disclosure: I am a musician!

@Acetone

Agreed. True collaboration can yield at least interesting, if not fanstastic, results, but flying someone in to voice a rhythm isn't the same thing as truly conversing and co-creating musically.

So much stuff now is keyboard based, it's almost as musical collaboration within any genre is becoming a thing of the past. One man, some technology, and some ideas can work pretty well too.

my own disclosure: I am too (piano, guitar and tenor sax...but only an amateur....if I had to live off my talents, I'd be dead by now!)

Joe Jackson and Lincoln Thompson

Mikey Dread and the Clash

Lee Perry and John Martyn

Earl 16 and Leftfield

Massive Attack and Horace Andy

Sly and Robbie with Bob Dylan and numerous others

There's probably loads more but thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

Maybe 2 different cases: Reggae artists collaborations with non-Reggae artists (crossover type of result)...or non-reggae artists collaborating with reggae session musicians (trying to get the "authentic" sound...like Serge Gainsbourg in the 70s with SlyRobbie and the Chung brothers).

In any case, what is a "Reggae artist" or even, what is a "reggae musician"?
On a personal level, met many reggae musicians but most of them they don't consider themselves "reggae musicians" or "reggae artists"...they think of themselves as "musicians".Is funny cause I consider myself a "Reggae musician" ( quite proudly actually cause it hasn't been an easy road) but most
of my heroes find that very limiting...even degrading!

My point is, they wouldn't see those collaborations (that we "knowledgable reggae fans/collectors" don't rate at all cause is soft / crossover/cheese) from the same perspective. They would collaborate with anybody.
