Any tips for a cheap turntable stylus/cartridge?
Hello! I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a cheap, decent quality cartridge. I don't have high end stereo gear, and I'm currently unemployed, so I'm not looking at spending more than £30 to £50. It's just that the stylus broke on my record player and I'm getting withdrawal!

If it's just the stylus that's broken and the rest of the cartridge is ok then try this site for a replacement:

I got a new stylus (some non-name brand) for my turntable for the first time in years and was disappointed to find that the output was considerably lower (quieter) and less full sounding than the old presumably quite worn stylus.
Can anyone offer an explanation? apart from the fact that I got a cheap crappy stylus!
I don't want to be tearing new grooves on my vinyl but then I'd actually like to enjoy listening to the records!
Also - does anyone have any comment on straight arm vs. curved arm turntables? Mine is straight and i use an eliptical stylus. Is this any significant impediment to getting good sound?

styli are not born equal. the OEM one is best for your cartridge and will probably sound best too. aftermarket ones often are cheaper but you will find you get what you pay for. not sure they will hurt your records but they definately may not produce the same range or balance as the original. and they may weight more or less and/or have more or less overhang than the one you previously used so you must re-setup your tonearm for the new stylus.
my advice: those who buy cheap buy often...spend the cash and get a good OEM stylus.
