It is said he was poisoned in prison in '96 but rumours also state that he could be alive. I'm guessing it's probably an Elvis-thing.

While I know opinons always vary, I have to admit, I don't understand why he is held in such high esteem as a DJ. While he did have a chart tune, his toasting skills were IMO marginal. When he was around, he seemed to fit into the camp of DJs whereby the mic was passed to him because he was respected as a "community person", and not because of his DJ skills. Meaning respect via fear more than respect via his talents.

Very interesting, as always, Dave K.

I like the slur in his vocal delivery. And I like the fact that only he can get away with chatting "stylee-lee" for a whole minute before actually starting the verse. Both suggest indifference, which, of course, is cool. And, for those of us too far detached to be influenced by fear, I think his whole mythic Rhygin/Sandokhan bad-man persona adds greatly to his appeal.

Thanks for explaining Don.

I know it's entirely subjective, I just find it interesting to see how some artists who were marginal at the time are lionized years later. And of course it works the other way, where some artists who were very inflential in affecting changes are not recognized.

I guess I am biased because he lived in my town for years, and his deeds were often written about in our local papers. Can one separate an artist's personal actions from his or her art? Ideally one can, but I have to admit having problems with doing so knowing some of the details. I guess this can be solved by paying less attention!
