King Tubby question (slightly trivial)

Post by Funky Punk »

When you first heard of King Tubby and before you saw a picture of him, did anyone else here imagine him as a big fat guy with dreadlocks?

I did. ;)

No. Not that I can remember.
Very few of the producers and engineers were dreads.
Though he was slimmer than I expected.
But the 'Tubby' part has nothing to do with his girth or lack of it.

Yeah, the 'Tubby' nickname came from his mum's (grandma's?) maiden name, didn't it? I read that somewhere the other day.

I also used to think that Fatboy Slim was actually the 'tubby' guy on the front of his 'You've Come a Long Way, Baby' album...

Ive read (sorry, i forget where) that the Tubby part came from his repairing radios and other electronics and the tubes in them.

So, he could've been forever known as 'King Tubey'? :D

haha yes. Well I just read in another thread on here that his mothers maiden name was Tubman. So i think that theory is sounding more credible than the tube thing i said earlier. Though it could be a combination..

In Jamaica small children that are a bit fat are often called Tubby (for Chubby),the nickname stuck

Heh, I had wondered where Junior Byles' 'Chubby' nickname came from. He looks really thin in all the photos I've ever seen of him...
