I remember Toots & The Maytals in the studio singing "Sweet and Dandy". The Jimmy Cliff song, I can't remember.

I didn´t see the doc so its hard to say. I think Jimmy Cliff's most famous ska is "Miss Jamaica", maybe that´s the one?...I wouldn't say "sweet & dandy" is a ska, at least the version I have, but The Maytals have a lot of nice recordings from the ska era.
The Wailers, Alton Ellis, The Maytals, Justin Hinds, Derrick Morgan, Laurel Aitken, Desmond Dekker,Prince Buster and many more...they all have great songs from the ska era.
If you are interested, I think the Trojan Ska Box set is a good example. Really vintage sound.
Peace

Re: I Search For Old Ska Songs Of A Reggae Documentary!?!?!?
ites deh
fe start dat black and white video is call "this is ska" recorded live at sombrero club circa 62 witch i'm looking for years so if yu find it jus say something i know some guys have it out deh.
i look for some years for the song of toots & maytals is call "So Bad" yu can find it on the "reggae got soul"album but yu will get disappointed like me because its from 76 and its not the same vibe and not a ska version from the 60's.never found the original recording if there some.
for jimmy cliff the song is call "KING OF KINGS" can find in the great compilation from trojan-THE HARDER THEY COME-definitive collection full of songs from dat era and the version is like in the documentary.
the problem with dat fantastic documentary roots rock reggaes dat is full of great song versions dat where never recorded or when they come out it was with other vibes.
the one i have dat is the same in the documentary is from Neville Martin-"the message" witch i love very much
even the Jimmy Cliff songs in dat are better than in studio like the version of "i´m a wanted man"
so if yu can find an original version of dat toots-"so Bad" mail me
respect everytime

Re: I Search For Old Ska Songs Of A Reggae Documentary!?!?!?
Thanks a lot!!But its not "Miss Jamaica"
The two songs I search for are in a row and were played in a "concert" , where a lot of people dance in front.
The Jimmy Cliff Song goes like ..."From the beginning...I was made ??...
And I search for other great EARLY ska songs , like the two songs in the docu , and they are very early because Toots and The Maytals are very young in this documentary(maybe 18 )
thanks a lot!!regards thore

Re: I Search For Old Ska Songs Of A Reggae Documentary!?!?!?
yes, from the beggining I was made king...I have that song but ina Desmond Dekker version, must be from 63 or 64. I uploaded it here for my blog, http://www.geocities.com/pollenlab1 in case you would like to listen.
The Maytals "Never grow old" is one of the first ska albums, and a great one imo. Its backed by the Skatalites, pure ska except for a couple of soulful ballads. Should be available from Heartbeat.
