Clydoh,
most likely from the associations between Reggae,Rastafarians and Ethiopia, birth place of Haile Selaisse, King Of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah.
Hopefully if anybody else has another interpretation they will post it too, as knowledge is power.

It is Ethiopias flag. But as collie explains it is the unofficial flag of Rastafari buecause they see especially ethiopia as the holy land Zion.

although similar, that is not the ethiopian flag but the ites, gold and green (thats the rainbow) are the colours that represent rastafari.

i could be wrong but i always seem to understand that the each represented something:
red-for the blood shed, gold-for the sun, green-for mother africa. my memory is foggy on the gold part....it could mean something else but Im pretty sure that the colors have their own meaning.
