Greetings
I have a question for the people of this forum
I could read in a spanish forum a commentary about Marcus Garvey.
In that forum a man wrote this words:
"Marcus Garvey had said: Haile Selassie was a cowardly, a man with not much intelligence and a shame to the black people."
I love this two persons, and I don´t understand those words.
Are this words a true?
Did Marcus hate Selassie?
Can somebody explain to me all this questions?
Thanks.
I´ve had a teacher, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, my African Teacher.

Re: Marcus Garvey ------ Haile Selassie Friends or enemies?
Sad to say I believe it is true. Garvey was critical of Selasie. I don't know that they were acquainted enough to be either friends or enemies.
I believe, and I may be wrong here-its been a long time since I read this- but I believe Garvey's criticism stemmed from being rebuffed by Selasie when he tried to call on him during Selasie's exile in UK. I think Garvey, who had a great sense of self-importance, felt Selasie should be doing more to effect the cause of Black liberation and an African homeland.
Again, I am not sure this is the exact cause of the enmity, but I am pretty sure that it did exist.
This does not take away from either man IMO, as we are all human beings- even the best intentioned have their faults.
Sorry I can't remember exactly where I read this. Like you I have long admired both men. Even did my high school term paper on Marcus Garvey-man that was 17 years ago-time flies.
Anyway here's a coupla Garvey links
There is Garvey info @ this link:

Prophet,
Just found the text of Garvey's speach.Be warned: VERY CRITICAL OF HAILE SELASSIE.
However, I would say to keep in my that Garvey had his own faults and came in for many similiar criticisms, some deserved but many not. So I would suggest trying to find an impartial source on the enmity between the 2 that would give a more balanced perspective.

Hope I've been of some help,

Re: Marcus Garvey ------ Haile Selassie Friends or enemies?
just read your question. an mi had mi won studies of marcus garvey and haile selassie since the early 90's. from my readings i do recall, garvey recognized the importance of ethiopia as the slomonic dynasty and the kinsmanship through menelik I, to the royal bloodlines, and the kebra negast, which stories the line of divinity through solomon and the queen of sheba to menelik and the ark of the covenant. having all this knowledge and spreading all the knowledge to all black people, to be proud. as you know in the bible, there was no name for africa but the name ethiopia, as ethiopia is africa. anyway, to make a long story short. during selassie's exile in England, marcus garvey was there during that time and was very eager to meet with the 225th king of the royal solomonic dynasty, the king of kings and the lord of lords, emperor haile selassie i. but as i recall, in one of the many marcus garvey books did read back then, he stated that when garvey tried introducing himself at that time, it was said that selassie snobbed him, as if he was of no importance, i guess what he was trying to say was like selassie ignored him and his presence. from that day on he garvey felt as a person who admired selassie so much as a person and in black identity and culture, garvey took it to heart and took it personal and took it as an insult as he was snubbed as his presence was disregarded be haile selassie. from that day forward garvey would make insults of the ethiopian king he would speak so greatly about at one time. he would speak of selassie short stature and things like that. though he did make a remark before he was to meet with him, on his garvey's dparture speech in jamaica in 1928, which would eventually turn all garveyites in jamaica into rastafarians in 1930, with his revelation "look towards africa, and soon there will be a crowned king, he will be the redeemer"
hope all that info helped.

Well i-man dont think that Selassie-I hated Garvey but garvey was more of a black people defender while Jah Rastafari(Haile Selassie I) was seen as a liberator for the black people although he hadn't stated that.

Marcus is the great prophet that opened the eyes of the people in the west about the abolition of slavery and the people's connection to the east.I THINK THAT THERE WAS MAYBE ONLY ONE INSTANACE THAT MARCUS DIDN'T FORSEE THE ULTIMATE PLAN OF H.I.M. HAILE SELASSIE I. AND HIS REMARKS ON THE SUBJECT SHOULD JUST BE CONSIDERED AS A LITTLE IGNORANCE ON HIS PART. THIS DOESN'T MEAN THAT HIS MAJESTY & THE PROPHET WERE ENEMIES. HAILE SELASSIE WOULDN'T HAVE CONSIDERED MARCUS AS AN ENEMY.Everything must bow to the KING.
HAILE SELASSIE I IS WORTHY TO BE PRAISED.

Re: Marcus Garvey ------ Haile Selassie Friends or enemies?
I went out on a date with a descendant of Haille Sellasie I in L.A. once and she said her whole family was weirded out by Rasta's worshipping of him as a god. It's interesting to note that it is believed that the Ark of The Covenant is in a church in a small Ethiopian village, I saw a documentary about this on TV and only one living person is entrusted to guard over it, living his whole life inside the church...
