Ernie B and original pressings

Stumbled upon this old thing when surfin' Ernie B's record shop earlier: Burning Spear - Social Living (Blood and Fire, 1994) marked as being the original UK pressing.

"Used record. Jacket is very nearly new. Vinyl sounds new or very nearly new. Original UK press. Recorded 1980, this was pressed in 1994."

If I'm not mistaken it was recorded in 1978, not 1980 and issued by Island in the UK also in 1978, making this B&F release a reissue. Ernie B's wants $69.99 for it and one might say that it feels a bit on the steep side, even if it would have been the real UK original pressing in NM condition from Island.

I've seen several other people on eBay charging ridiculous amounts for records they advertise as original pressings when infact they are not, but I find it somewhat more alarming when one of the worlds biggest reggae distributors does it. People new to reggae collecting might think that $70 is what this should cost and cough up only to get suckered in the end.

So what I really wanted to say with this post is: Record collecting noobs, if you see a record you're interrested in that seems expensive take time and do some research first, it will save you big money in the end. Old records are'nt always by default expensive, some were pressed in very large amounts and are not as rare as sometimes advertised. And obviously, just because it says 'original pressing' it doesn't mean that this is always the truth. Some people seem to confuse original pressing with old pressing.

well... it's an original UK Blood and Fire pressing isn't it ?

Social Living was the UK version of the Jamaican Marcus Children.
The original UK release was on One Stop (1978), rereleased by Island (probably 1980).
The B&F release was actually the first UK release of Marcus Children (but titled Social Living). It has a different running order and some tracks are alternate mixes/edits - some longer, some shorter. Great sound as well...

I agree that Ernie´s prices on most originals are too high, but they seem to sell...(?)

First UK issue was on One Stop (1978), later revived on Island. The Blood & Fire one was the third UK edition, and it was issued in a different sleeve than the first two UK editions.

well not surprised.check most of his records.the original pressings.the prices just ridiculous.guess whether they sell at all as i do see some on ebay and other shops very cheap.just pure greed...

i am not sure about the lp in question.

no one has to buy anything , greed is questionable.if no one buys it ,its worth 0$ to ernie or just part of a nice personal ernie collection wich is beyond any $worth.One could call the buyers greedy wanting something and willing to pay what ever for it.

Without a question though i call -Greed mp3 freeloaders,with their gigs and terras. i hope all their h/d crash and burn.more fyah -

That's true I guess, nobody must buy anything. But I think there's a difference between having no respect for your own money and just throwing it away on stuff that is way overpriced (add falsely advertised to that) just so they can have it NOW whatever the cost, and actually having no real knowledge about records and getting tricked into thinking that $70 (such as in the above case) must be the correct value since the biggest reggae dist in the world seh so.

Hi, The price is too high, but Ernie B is quick, professional and easy. I don't believe in pirating the still available lps and cds to turn to mp3s and share either, but mp3s for personal use are great!! can't play your beautiful vinyl in your car or on your portable headphones on the beach or on the boombox in a warehouse or on an airplane... blah blah blah. Personally, I buy the vinyl for home use and convert to digital for the rest, I assume many others do too. Or what about poor folks that can't get the real lp and would otherwise never hear the music? Sorry to irk some of y'all and to hijack. no harm intended. Nah Catch A Fyah fe mi h/ds!!!!!!
