Where have all the labels gone?

Post by Karl (NZ) »

Whats up with the re-issue's market in CD's? I have noticed that as of this year Heartbeat have put nothing out Trojan have put out the Don Drummond Memorial album and the six Reggae Chartbusters comps and thats it from both of these. It seems VP/17 North Parade and Geensleeves are joining forces but at least they are putting some good material out. Pressure Sounds are keeping up the good works but from where i am at the bottom of the world it seems there has been a real slowdown in album issue's this year.It seems the internet is killing the Cd market which blows i personaly wont own an ipod i like the physical object as this is what collecting is all about and of course the greatest music in the world.
So if anyone has any other ideas other than the global recession as to why the market is just dry for new material being releases on CD can they tell the rest of us.

Hi all,
From what i have heard about reggae from Oz its all good and yes we in NZ have been lucky enough to have Raggamufffin at least for last two years.Am very much looking forward to Sly & Robbie at the 2010 session.
I actualy work in NZ's answer to your JB-HI-FI except we just do music and DVD's so i do have access to some good supply's of overseas companys stock. I am just miffed as it just seems that not a lot has come out compared with the last few years.I will say that Pressure sounds are just awsome Pete Holdsworth and his mates are doing the world a great service with the stellar releases this year i just cant get enough of the Sound System International KIng Tubby & Dynamites release is just something special. What i am interested in and am waiting for is one from the Japanese Rock A Shaka outfit a Glen Brown Dub album i hope with the price to import i am not gonna be let down. And Vp/Greensleeves are putting out 3 CD's worth of Joe Gibbs 12" selections cant wait for that.So a little bit to look forward to i just hope our situation regards re-issue's improves next year.

Not only has the number of reissue labels reduced significantly in the past year or two, many recent reissue CDs have hardly been worthwhile imo, containing material that has been reissued several times before. There is hardly any rare stuff still resurfacing in reissues - except from select labels, such as Pressure Sounds, for one. Makasound who released the wonderful as yet unrealesed Mikey Ras Star album a year or two back have also stopped their reissue program as far as I know. It seems like those remaining are more intent on re-reissuing "hits" that they reckon will sell again. Best of Treasure Isle, Best of Niney, Deluxe edition this and that ....

...PS: while at the same time there are heaps of Reggae singles from the 70s and 80s that have never found their way onto a CD, and imo probably never will.

We have to make the most of the time that's left, in a market that is vanishing due to downloading and the fact that its buyers increasingly get bogged down with families, mortgages and life insurances as they grow older. With no younger generation following up to keep the market alive for long.

...I hope I'm being too pessimistic!

Ras_savitri makes a very valed point but at the last couple of Reggae show's that i have had the pleasure of attending and beleive me they are very few in New Zealand it was a good percentage on young folk's there but as to if they are collectors well this is another matter all together. I am guessing that they are all of the download generation which is sad as they have never had the pleasure of owning something special being able to check liner notes or compare with other releases from the same act's all the stuff that makes me joyfull when receiving something that i have waited for or knowing that it is one of only a couple in the country NZ is a small place.
But my point is if the companys dont start getting more titles out the door none of us will be able to enjoy these things again.

Sad but true!

Hey Karl,
I was wondering how long the " honeymoon " would last.
I could not believe how much great music was being re-released
and I am sure a lot of great music still exists,,,, BUT will we see it ?
The Japanese might be the ones to lead the way.

BTW What is the problem with the LIVE scene in NZ ?
I thought Reggae was popular in NZ !

BTW you can listen to that G.Brown album @ reggarecord.com
I have all of the Rock A Shacka releases except the last two. Nice selections.

Hey Selecta,
In NZ we do have some great acts Black Seeds, Katchafire, Sweet & Irie amongst other's but overseas acts are far and few as it just aint financial enough to come to NZ for just one gig unless its a big one. Checked out theat japanese site on recomendation from you Selecta looks like a good place to hunt down some of the more obscure titl;es that are available. It just seems this last year has seen very few re-releases and Trojan at least are doing nothing of note but i do like the Don Drummond memeorial set they re-issued as a double CD with heaps of extra's but as for the Chartbusters series of albums most of it is just the same old same old but that is not to say it isnt good as there is quite a few numbers on the six releases that i just dig. Even though i work for a retail shop selling CD's & DVD's we just dont get a lot of the import as these are deemed by my boss's to be to specialised so its just top 50 stuffs. But that does not stop me driving myself broke to score as much import material as i can i just hope i still am able to in the next five years. I just wish it was like with Trojan, Blood & Fire etc..for a few years we have had it pretty good i guess the antholodgy's Trohan did at the start of the century just rocked and its a shame they arent doing more like it now.Blood & Fire is just a big shame that they couldnt get anything done after the Singerman comp very sad i am about that.I could go on about this for hours but i just hope that someone out there will pick up the peices and make life for the collector of the CD a joy again.
Well enough from me.
