Burning Rockers/Sounds/Vibrations artist "Zambanidis"

Post by Laurie Jackson »

Since the advent of internet searches I've been checking in looking for Burning labels. In the 90's there was nothing except my own ramblings on discussion pages. Now I see the roots archives has some of the Burning releases documented, but no referrence to Zambanidis, a vocal group, probably UK, who did a fabulous single called "Freedom Fighter".

It starts: "We've been waiting for a long long time, for you to utter and speak your mind, for we will hear what you have to say, before ?????? mek you go away..." and so on.

Killer guitar work, fat molasses bass, I- threes like backing vox, drums on fire....grooves are huge.

I have the 12" single and seek a CD of this band's entire catalogue, if such exists.

I think we're talking of the same band known as UK band Zambandis.
Apart from the 12" single you mention there is only one other 12" single to my knowledge called "Go deh" b/w "Live and let live" (Burning Sounds BSD016).
They are quite interesting but I doubt if there is more in the vaults somewhere (Trojan ???) so maybe due to lack of material there never will be a full-length compilation.
Anyway, I am also interested in getting more information about them.
Anybody can add more to this ?

I have only ever came across 3 different 12"s on vinyl by the group Zabandis. I used to have a Zabandis 12" disco on the people unite record label (misty in roots/music co-op), I forget what it was called though, but I remember I didn't care for it at the time. It had a disco song with the dub on the flip. I have a 12" disco on the Musical Spinner (UK roots records subsidiary) label by Zabandis called "One Dream"/"One Dub". It is a more contemporary style of reggae, nice harmonies , nice tune. I also have the JAh is alive / freedom fighter (burning sounds 12") by tekla MAriam Zabandis. Cool roots tunes. You can purchase either of the last two vinyl 12"s I mentioned on either of my websites: http://www.bomreggae.gemm.com or http://www.topshota.com . If you have any questions contact me through http://www.myspace.com/jahadambom or email me at jahadambom@yahoo.com
hope this helps. ADam

That myspace has a picture of a 12" on the Bushay's label. I think the vocal is Louisa Marks and there are two instrumental dubs by Zabandis.

They made about 7 or 8 12inches as ZABANDIS and one or two as ZABANDIS. And they are backing group on many twelves - some released on the BURNING label, some on the BUSHAYS label.

They're also credited as backing band on some tracks from the Stuntman LP by Clement Bushranger Bushay. Makes sense as he was involved with both Burning and Bushay labels.
