I don't know too much about the Roots lead guitar. Inna this time we should pay respects to Lynn Tait for his melodic lines and Ernest Rangling for his chromatic tones.
The rock influence was inevitable, ever since Marley entered the mainstream in the mid 70s. From this aspect, I havo to talk about Moony, Steel Pulse's fomer lead guitarist. His use of distortion solos almost reminds of Al Anderson and Junior Marvin, just with a heavier feel.

Lynn Tait, Ernest Rangling, Sowell, Chinna, Willy Lindo, John Kpypaye, and many more. Masters who can play with taste and feel, without the annoying distortion.
( if I wanted listen to blues / rock distorted guitar....I wouldn't listen to Reggae, I'd listen to the real thing. Hundreds of guitarists are much better at that than the wannabe reggaerock/crossover/stadium/mtv/grammy reggae....same way, if you wanna heavy drum and bass reggae....don't listen to Pop bands having a go at it, listen to the real thing)
