Re: Joe Higgs - Unity Is Power
Must admit I have definitely listened to the Jerry Butler song, but don't recall it all. On the other hand I just cannot stop playing the acoustic (DVD) version of "There's A Reward". I really don't think it gets any better than that.
"Now I know the truth and must reveal it unto the youth."

Thanks for naming the Jerry Butler tune..... that's the one indeed. Incidentally, Winston Jarrett did a re-interpretation of that song with The Righteous Flames. Must've been played often in JA back in the early sixties. I do agree, the Joe Higgs "There's A Reward" is unbeatable, especially the acoustic one!

Re: Joe Higgs - Unity Is Power
Just listened to them both back to back and I still would never have associated these two tracks. And no wonder!
Similar opening guitar lick.....possibly.
Lyrics; **both** have borrowed "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child" from a traditional Negro Spiritual.
So this leaves "no one cares for me" and "Sometimes I look to this world with a smile".
Looking at the meaning behind both songs;
In the first song the singer is lonely and wants a girlfriend.
In the second he believes there is some kind of redemption in the next life after the *sufferation* of this life.
I am requesting a steward's enquiry!

Re: Joe Higgs - Unity Is Power
Getting back to 'Unity Is Power', I finally managed to buy this record via eBay for a bargain price and the postie delivered it yesterday. Only given it one spin so far, but it sounded like everything I hoped it would be -- and more. Shall spin it again a few times today to explore the details of this masterpiece!
Thanks again to the R-A massive for the opinions and sentiments that encouraged me to get this LP.

Both I and my best friend, Rob, looked for this album for years, all over the world and we couldn't find it. Since then Rob's (and Joe Higgs have both) passed and I have only found a few tracks on Youtube. I'd pay anything for this album.

Re: Joe Higgs - Unity Is Power
Jimmy Cliff and Joe sang together on a version of "Sound Of The City" on a 7 inch on SunPower, which I believe was Jimmy Cliff's label. They also dueted another song of Joe's together on this label, "Son's Of Garvey" which is obviously different than the version on the "Unity Is Power" LP!
