The Upsetters - Key card/Domino game.

Post by Musitronics »

The only key cards we have in the UK are key meter cards, for charging up your gas or electric.

What is its meaning here in this tune?

Is it a Credit card? Room key card? Bassball card? Playing card? Electicity card? lol and how can it be "Free up" the songs about a domino game, so what is the refference to this key card, what is it for, what does it mean?

Any ideas?

Okay, I'm not sure, as I've never played dominoes before (besides lining them up and knocking them down as a kid), but I think he's saying "key car." Apparently, there's a version of dominoes called train dominoes in which the individual dominoes, called cars, are lined up to form trains.

In the song (or at least the first verse -- I didn't listen any further), it sounds like the singer is coveting his friend's woman. She's the "key car," but his friend has her in his hand. If the friend plays that certain "car" (relinquishes control over his woman), the singer will be able to play all his dominoes and win the game (hook up with his friend's woman). The friend senses the singers intentions, and is reluctant to drop the "key car."

Perhaps? Any dominoes players out there who can elicudate us?

Nice one DB!!

Ah, the track is definitely titled Key card, but . . . I think your right about the girl, I'm still not sure about the Key Card, I'm wondering if maybe it's the Score card? and she's the girl who's keeping the score?

There are a couple of better versions of this tune perhaps they might shed some more lite on the subject.

Both versions were written by the Upsetters, "Key Card" and "Domino Game". I'm pretty sure "Domino Game" is Perry himself playing Dominoes with the Upsetters, there's also some more dialogue where you hear the girl arrive at the game, but it's near impossible to make out what's happening.

"Standard domino sets consist of 28 pieces called bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, spinners or dominoes."

I guess the same interpretation would still make sense: she's the key card in a metaphorical game of dominoes.

WOW i havn't heard this tune since primary school.

When i was a kid , on some weekends there would be big family gatherings for food and drink and the men would usually take over the dining table for dominoes. From what i remember (as i was to young to get involved with the big mans game) 4 players would take each end of the table opposite players would be partners. They took the game very serious and were very technical, they could work out which player had certain dominoes by adding the dots on cards that have been played.

The winner is the player who has the least dots left in his hand at the end of the game,if you have a certain domino in your hand you can block the whole game and everyone would add up the dominoes left and whoever has the least dots in there hand would win.I think this was what they referered to as the key as this card could control the whole game as you can decide whether players can play or pass and if they pass they can't get rid of their dominoes.First pair to win six games is the champion, hence the reference to "six love"this was very embarassing.

The reference to this song is his partner in the game is the baby father of the woman that has just walked in the room and he finds his partners woman attractive and is saying you have the Key Card (contol the woman) we are partners so give me permission (free up) to have a piece ,don't block the game let me win this time.

A bit of 70's reggae humour.

Hope this gives the song some meaning. WHEW!

How can i get a copy of this tune! Great musical arrangement.

Bless

Wicked!!! it all makes sence now!!!!

Yeah it's a Bad tune hey, I just bought the UK 7" Press, I had to hunt for it though, I havn't seen it released on any of the Upsetters Albums. I bought mine from Lion Vibes Records, I'd recomend them for buying in the UK they have good prices and fast shipping, though it seems I got the last copy.

I'm sure the 7" does pop up from time to time still though, until then you could always just save those links (right click/save link as) Sorry thats the best I can do.

Thanks everyone, there was me thinking it was a electric meter card lol.

Nuff respect!

in dominoes a 'key card' is the only card that can be played.
