Re: Secret Black Ark/Lee Perry Productions
thats correct marcus66.
AnorakTrev, imo that doesn't prove anything. anyway my opinion is that it wasn't mixed by King Tubby.
HouseofDread: check out "Black Man Time" by Tinga Stewart & Brent Dowe. Its definitely mixed by King Tubby.

Hi Visitor
Only repeating what was written in the liner notes !! We can only assume that the people who write these things know what they are talking about , unless we know different
The writer in question is Ian McCann , who says , quote , " ... Fatman says "He ( Tubby ) could take most of the credit as he did most of the work " "

Re: Secret Black Ark/Lee Perry Productions
there is always the distinction between mixed AT King Tubbys (say 70 or 80 percent of mid 70s dubs & vocals) and mixed BY king tubbys (only a few releases after 75).
Since Tubby's name is a selling point, lots of dubs actually mixed at king tubbys studio by the likes of Phillip Smart, Jammys, Scientist & Pat Kelly, are miscredited to the king himself.
Stand and look is a black ark produced riddim, voiced by Jammys at King Tubbys and licensed to Fatman by Jammys. The only real King Tubbys involvement is that the Fantells voiced the track in his sudio and Jammys mixed the vocals there

Re: Secret Black Ark/Lee Perry Productions
... all fairy tales Stand & Look should be made by whoever than Lee Perry; no one even remotely has the Upsetter's talent in composing, harmonizing, timing and directing a vocal like that, let alone mixing a dub ...
Many Ark tunes werent released on Upsetter labels, blew off to elsewhere and got brought out on other imprints; this is just one of em.
Plain jealousy of this ever ambitious Jammy, Fatman and consorts claiming it.
addit: Jammy certainly knew how to kill off an Ark track; take forinstance that King Tubby (read Jammy) Ina Jamdung (to Set Up Youself/Ivory Girl/Dread In A Jamdong), totally dried out boring mix.
And the dub of Rajah Ruffin's Street Walking, also dull and dissapointing ...
you guessed it, i'm not a prince/king Jammys fan

Re: Secret Black Ark/Lee Perry Productions
oh well 3pan1, how are you
the fact that in the version alone you can hear clearly hear snippets of Leroy Sibbles (and/or heptones), and the vocal features the Fantells ( a Jammys group) suggest to me that there was an earlier cut of this song by Leroy Sibbles or the Heptones ( i dont know it, so it's either never released or very hard to find)
So for me it is probably that Lee Perry gave/sold/lend this Leroy Sibbles/Heptones riddim to Jammys and the latter revoiced the song using his own artists.
So yes.. lee perry was involved inthe composing, harmonizing and directing of the vocal, and he deffinately mixed the riddimtrack. but Jammys revoiced it (maybe in tubby's, maybe in the Black Ark) and released it in Jamaica (on Boss) and licensed it to Fatman in the UK.
David Katz' anecdote that Tubby did mix it in a Black Ark style is indeed a fairytale or Luuuu as the say inna JA

Re: Secret Black Ark/Lee Perry Productions
... fine, thanks Jumbo, hope all swell !
sorry but i really cant make Jammy cheese of it in any way, but okay, if the Fantails may be a Jammy group then this one was voiced @ Ark and (as always therefore) under total Upsetter auspicien ... it really doesnt sound like a layover vocal to me, but precisely tailored for the rhythm, as being one and completely fitting so to speak, like only an Upsetter could tailor a sound ...

This may be a fairy tale too but i'm sure I read somewhere(mojo magazine?) that Perry was currently working with the Congos at the Black Ark recording new material or maybe it was a beautiful dream.any truth to this?

@ 3pan1
You can hear Leroy Sibbles singing the same lyrics in the version, so i think the riddim etc. was tailored for this song, which was originally voiced by Leroy Sibbles, but i dont know that vocal version.
For one reason or the other, the Sibbles/Heptones cut wasnt used, but instead the Fantells voiced te same song over the riddim. That's why i suspect a Jammys/Perry collaboration..Perry might have given the track to Jammys to use. probably after Leroy Sibbles & Perry parted ways.
@ House of Dread.. more like a nightmare. Lee Perry's name is addded to a very mediocre congoes album for commercial reasons alone.
