New Reggae

Post by alonsoreggae »

Just seeking some wisdom. A lot of times when people ask me what do you listen to I and i say reggae, of course. Most people reply - so you like Sublime and Slightly Stoopid? (two California bands, in my opinion Surf Rock, not reggae) My immediate reaction is to say: They are not reggae. Immediatly I get the look, like if I'm a weirdo. I know I'm not and I know I'm right when saying those bands are not reggae, but I dont know how to tell people that Sublime is not reggae; influenced by it, but not it.

I'm just an aprentice. I don't like to be looked on as a smart ass, but most americans are not aware of the real deal, the real reggae music, especially the young ones like me. I want to hear your opinion on these subject.

Should I guide them towards good reggae, or should I let them find it? I got introduced to it, and that was enough to get me hooked for life.

PS: Last weekend I went to a Slightly Stoopid show and they played "On the Other Side" by The Gladiators, 30x faster than the actual version, but the fact that they played it made my night. These bands at least know about reggae music, but are heavily influenced by others genres.

Personally I'm not a big fan of telling other what's what. Just tell them that you like reggae but not that type but rather the more typical sounds of Jamaica.

Never heard any of those two groups ... but Slightly Stoopid is a stupid name. :D

If those bands are playing at 100mph sounds like they are more into SKA than Reggae.
If you want to "guide" people I would tell them that!
Tell them the bands YOU like then also suggest some SKA music to them.
Something old and something new, like the Aggrolites.
There is a community radio station here in Brisbane Australia that is streaming online and they have a SKA show. Check it out... 4ZZZ FM

You are a little lucky. I still get "OH MAN I LOVE BOB MARLEY"
Lick it back Selecta!
