I'll say there is no such thing as a good reggae album. The best stuff you find is from 7" inches.

Much raspect to pablo! Lp's really do not do his style or influnce justice. Lots of talk here bout the the nile, but if one really want ital roots verison, check 7" song Java on Impact records and the cut Fat baby on 7". Jah only judge the good not the bad!!!

It's a music best served by singles, but there are also many good LPs out there.

Eastman dub and rockers comes east are both swell albums as is rising sun.

Well everybody is entiteld to his opinion this is mine.

The fact that this thread exist means that he must be somebody important. I couldnt imagen reggae without Augustus Pablo. On the other hand his output tends to be a little bit unstable. Meaning not every thing has the same standard of high quality. While on the other hand I could buy tomorrow a 7'' unkown to most of us with a mind blowing Pablo on it. And that changerate is higher then most artists.

Well Rockers meets King Tubby uptown is more or less a Tubby show. Very very well produced and mixed. One of the best mixed Dub Lp's there is. So much is happening there If you know what I mean. It is not overrated tmho you only could say that dozen other dub LP's are underrated.

To give this discussion some new input. I think we have to distinguis the producer Agustus Pablo and the player of instruments. On that I donnot have a opinion because I donnot have enough productions of him but I could image that there is a difference.

I have to be in the right mood for Pablo.

It seems like a bit of a reggae cliche now on compilations now to have the vocal version, followed by the DJ version, followed by the version with Tommy McCook squawking over it, followed by the version with Augustus Pablo squawking over it, followed by the dub.

Since he's responsible for some of my all-time favourite albums (Hugh Mundell - Africa Must Be Free... to name one) I figure I can cut him some post-mortem slack for sometimes sounding like he's going through the motions...

Still one of the finest artists to have emerged from reggae music and I started listening to him about 25 years ago! Definitely underrated.

Orthodox Reuben (surely not Al Silver Reuben?) is right to say there would be none of the modern dub sound without Pablo. If you don't like melodica, try his xylophone pieces.

When he teamed up with vocalists (Johnny Clarke, Junior Delgado, Horace Andy as well as those already mentioned) they produced some of their career best - just check Every Knee Shall Bow 12" or Problems by Horace Andy over the Mr Bassie riddim.

He kept producing interesting if inconsistent work right into the 1990s, such as My Eyes Open by Sister Rasheda or Valley Of Jehosaphat by himself.

A true originator.
