well I like all bob marley albums, but if I would be the one to decide which album I would give a grammy or something I would chose
Survival, because of the beautiful lyrics. I think this album has the best lyrics and most conscious tunes
Natty Dread because its revolutionary spirit. I never heard again an uncompromising Bob Marley this on his other albums
And Uprising because this was the album Bob Marley said to us listeners good bye. And because phrases like "there ain't no use, can't stop them now". It seems like marley was in doubt about the good over evil theory

Maybe I had to explain a bit my "Confrontation" theory. Clearly its not one of his greatest albums, but if we are talking about a first time listener: what are we expecting? to start chanting the Lion of Judah inmediately, to make him understand what is babylon,etc... with his first listen?
I think those albums you are proposing are great but a bit heavy to digest for a first timer. What if he dont like it, The box set is a bit expensive for just a try.
Sometimes the best signal of approbation of a musical style is just your foot moving with the beat.

I'm not realy into Bob Marley when he sang for Island. Nevertheless this period is perhaps the best for a non reggae fan.
I would say that "Catch A Fire" & "Burning" are the best from this period. The unrelease mix on the last "Catch A fire" reissue is simply killer.
Otherwise the best Wailers material is the one produced by Marley. The "Soul Rebel" & "Soul revolution" LPs are two of my fav LPs. These Upsetters session were reissued plenty time and can be found at very reasonable prices.

The Wailing Walers at Studio 1
Climb The Latter, what about these early Wailers albums.
